View Full Version : Have I become a sissy?
Man I just can no longer stand the noise AMD systems make.

Even the noise of a 27 CFM YS Tech drives me nuts now.

Maybe it's time for me to go Intel... <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif"border=0>
Maybe you should try to determine why you think AMD systems are noisy. I thought P4s gave off more heat on average than XPs? Doesn't Intel quote "typical" heat generation/power consumption while AMD lists maximum? Am I mistaken about this?

Are you comparing OEM Intel systems to home-built AMD systems? Some OEMs put more effort in finding a balance in components than people give them credit for. Think about it, they probably spend days or weeks designing and testing a configuration because they will sell thousands of units. Most of us don't put that much thought and testing into our systems, we tend to go overboard on cooling (and all other performance aspects) just to be safe.

Also, I have heard that power supply fans contribute a lot of noise to a system, more than many people realize.

Noise is becoming a much more widely recognized issue nowadays. But I haven’t seen anybody in the hardware enthusiast community undertake a comprehensive analysis of the issue. Just a few people taking sound level readings during HSF tests, and that is not the whole story.

Maybe you should do some testing and make an article on this subject Colin, it could be revolutionary for the enthusiast community. People are starting to care but no one is taking a scientific look at the issue.

I can assure you that my next machine will be quieter than the one I am using right now, whatever CPU is inside.
The Willaimette Pentium 4's give off more heat then AthlonXP's yes, however they have massive heatsinks and large (albeit slow) fans as well. AMD has a long way to go in terms of designing their own cooling solutions. Those renamed Coolermaster heatsinks + slim line 60mm fan are just garbage. The skive hsf's that come with XP2000+ and higher is a big step forward, however that's still not enough.

As for system comparison, they're both custom built. Usuallly noise doesn't bother me, however it just drives my folks nuts. LOL, they constantly complain that my computer is too loud and believe it or not, it's not even as loud as 1 60mm delta fan! The general db level is a little lower and there's no high pitch.

One thing I like about P4's is that, even highly clocked CPU's can still use stock Intel cooling. That goes a long way to show how well designed the unit is. 2.8 GHz+ on stock cooling. Imagine using a Coolermaster+ slimline 60mm fan on a XP running at 1.8 GHz, that person would be crazy.

My 400W Sparkle PSU is a bit louder then most PSU's however, if I swap it out for my 550W Enermax the overall noise is still about the same.

Hmm, you're right CHE I think I'll investigate this a little further... There have been a few sound proofing articles out there, but I don't believe they hit at the heart of the problem since they really only absorb and mask all the noise.

Ya, Same thing my next rig will be quiet...

is watercooling an option?
Well again watercooling doesn't tackle the heart of the issue... Current AMD chips just run to too hot while cooling solutions are lousy.

The T-Bred helps out running quite a bit cooler, however it'll be far from what Intel users are use to.

There isn't any thermal information about the hammer so it's too early to guess but I'm sure hoping that it doesn't suffer from the same problems the Athlon CPU does.
yes, you have become quite the sissy girl Colin! First the "I think I'm getting fat!" and now this?? sheesh!
hahah, j/k dude..
LOL!!! It's banning time...

Hey I should have time to unlock your processor next week.
Sure, it's cool
Hopefully Crucial will send back the stick of RAM by that time and I could give you back your stick of OCZ back too
Cool man, you know my office number right?

Hmm, it has been a while have you called Crucial to ask what the status is?

a little OT, but whats going on with crucial...i orded 2x256 2100, and they both died within a week of each other...still waiting on the rma return on the second stick...i have been seeing in alot of forums where there have been alot of crucial sticks givin up the farm...now im sure its just percentages, with the amount of memory that crucial must sell, but what were the odds of both sticks dieing??? the kingmax is playing very nice with the board now tho...so i guess it worked out for the best...
Colin: Hmm.. I haven't yet.. I think I"ll call tomorrow when I get home from school
I'll tell ya about the status after I'm done with the call
Geez, I have never had any problems with Crucial myself... I found them curtious and quite prompt. The only time i had to RMA some memory was back in SDRAM days and it only took a few working days! I wonder what happened.

CygnusX1, I haven't heard much of Crucial ram going bad however I guess since they're so large it's bound to happen. You're right though the odd's aren't likely. Maybe you should buy a lottery ticket!

revvy that's cool man, let me know. When it comes in drop by and I'll unlcok your XP!
Dammit!
Crucial still hasn't received my RAM yet!

Oh well, I guess that's what I get for sending thru regular mail..
revvy you didn't op for advanced RMA? Damn, I hope the ram didn't get lost that would totally suck dude...

Hey, so when you gonna drop by?

i overnighted the through work... their advanced rma sux...they CHARGE your card for the ram, then credit it when they rcv it...i'm not takin that risk...the turn around isnt that bad...once they rcvd the ram, it was shipped out the next day...
Really, I never knew that. Hmm I gotta talk to Crucial about that for sure! Thanks for letting me know!
Whenever you can have me over I guess.. or when I get the stick of RAM back... doesn't really matter to me dude
Oh, in answer to your original question.......

Yes, you are a sissy.
revvy, geez, just make up your mind! Whenever is usually cool with me...

I'm shocked Comixion, how could you say that?

Ok, when's a good time for you, Colin?

Let's unlock this baby and see what potential she has!
Hmm... Maybe tomorrow... I'll let you know then.

Hey, what did youthink of that AMD CPU at 2.3 Ghz?
wtf?
you got your XP up to 2.3 GHz???

I never knew about that... what CPU rating did you have original and what stepping?
oh yeah.. what cooling method.? don't tell me Peltier...
what do you think of my new avatar? much better than the crabby one before!

It's pretty spiffy ain't it??? Optimus Prime looks menacing eh?

Oh yeah, your Candy cane avatar isn't gonna help you with the sissy image that you've bestowed upon yourself!
change it dude!
That avatar is sweet revvy

Nice work.

you got your XP up to 2.3 GHz???

I think he is talknig about these guys? http://www.forumdeluxx.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=8&t=000751

If that thing OC's like that with "reasonable" cooling I am sold Of course, "reasonable" is a qualitative term which is dependant on the overclock
Ya I saw that earlier but a few things caught my eye... First the 2.2V he needs to feed his CPU. The T-Bred is only suppose to have 1.65V so upping it to 2.2V is pretty hardcore. Also what type of cooling is he using? It can't be air that's for sure! I guess we'll know in a few days though.

actually these sort of overclocks are worthless, notice that the boot screen shows no drives attached, given it's a photo of the screen thats probably as far as he could get it to boot.
Hehe... True tshirt, that's just a POST screen and is pretty much useless... But still, it does look very good and gives him bragging rights.
no i dont think u have. its got more to do with age 8-P. ur exhibiting symptoms of accelerated ageing as a direct result of ur overclocking habits. perhaps its time to switch to the slow lane? LOL.

bravo3 out
