I read this a firingsquad.com... apparently John Carmack chose the next-gen ATI part to power the Doom3 Demo showcased at E3... can this finally be a sign of the good times ahead for ATI (beating down Nvidia of course) ?

It goes a long way in showing how well ATi done in the last little while.

revvy, yes the R300 will be a good card, but how will it stack up to the nv30? I'm honestly very interested in the nv30 myself, it'll have some 3dfx technology in it!

You should be more interested in new cards from Matrox and 3DLabs. We all know nVidia and ATI will release kick ass products......how will the new guys do?

Unfortunately while the Matrox and 3DLabs cards have ton of potential, I think they'll be slower and buggier then the cards from nVidia and ATI. Matrox and 3DLabs just doesn't have enough experience with the gaming market to produce solid drivers...

I sure hope they can prove me wrong though!

ATI and nVidia have been going head to head for quite some times. You'd expect them to be developing technology at a rapid rate just so they can out do eachother.....or at least that's what I thought a few months ago. Just the fact that 3DLabs and Matrox can just up and make a card that competes with nVidia and ATI shows to me that they aren't really trying very hard to improve performance. I'm hoping that nVidia doesn't catch Intelitus and stop caring about the consumer.

Well said.

Hoenstly, I'm very excited about the nv30... I use to be a huge 3dfx freak and the nv30 will have some 3dfx technology in it! I like ATI, but right now, I'm more of an nvidia fan... Their cards never give me any problems.

Last week when I was talking to the Matrox rep at the AMD Tech Tour, he actually hinted to me that the performance of the Parhelia will not be very good! He said it may even be lower then Ti4600 levels! I guess we'll find out next week though.

At the time ATI had the fastest card that id software was able to use, im sure if nvidia had their next gen card somewhat ready carmac would have used it.

<< PS matrox ? NEW guys? >>

As far as 3d technology...yeah..they have astounding 2d and multi-monitor support, but as far a 3d support, they are not up to par w/ nvidia or ati. so in that aspect they are the new guys...still, the more competition out there pushing the technology to the limits, we the end users will benefit.

<< At the time ATI had the fastest card that id software was able to use, im sure if nvidia had their next gen card somewhat ready carmac would have used it. >>

go back and read some more of carmacks interviews/statments...he has been behind ati since the inception of the 8500.

Damn CygnusX1 you beat me to it!

From the brief review on Tomshardware I saw (before they took it down) the Parhelia is VERY slow... scored 7000 3dmarks! Hopefully it's a driver issue, the fillrate was higher hten a Ti4600.

<< go back and read some more of carmacks interviews/statments...he has been behind ati since the inception of the 8500. >>

That's right, Carmack has a good reason to choose ATI as well. The 8500 is clearly superior to the GF3 Ti500 in performance AND features. Heck the 8500 has more features then the GF4 Ti line of cards! 8500 is a DX8.1 card while the GF4 Ti's are only DX8.

<< At the time ATI had the fastest card that id software was able to use, im sure if nvidia had their next gen card somewhat ready carmac would have used it. >>

I don't believe Carmack has any loyalties to any company... He uses what's best out there at the time.

I think the 8500 is a damm good card. A friend of mine has it and its very stable from what I played with it.

I think ATI and nVIDIA will be like AMD and Intel. Personally right now I think the nVIDIA cards are better - but within a year Im sure mass people will switch to ATI because the price vs performance ratio will continue to get better.

Hey Colin all those nice cards you test out... what do you do with them after youre done, maybee sell them at low low prices to forum members, I sure could go for a GF4...
<< I think ATI and nVIDIA will be like AMD and Intel. Personally right now I think the nVIDIA cards are better >>

I agree here, a two horse race is good... A 3rd competitor would be even better. It's a shame that videocard prices keep rising though! As for nVidia cards being better, I disagree there, I'd say they're faster not better. Of course everyone is entitled to their opinion!

<< Hey Colin all those nice cards you test out... what do you do with them after youre done, maybee sell them at low low prices to forum members, I sure could go for a GF4... >>

Haha, everyone always asks me this... Unfortunately about 50% of the time we have to send them back to the manufacturer. Of the cards we do get to keep, we usually need them for reference, when comparing to newer stuff, etc. Don't worry though after the memory contest in the forum I'm gonna try to have a videocard contest here as well!

I forget where but somewhere i read a review on the new Matrox board. It performs a LOT slower than the geforce 4 currently on the market. The NV30 will blow it away, but it has some features that push it ahead of the geforce 4's on the market when performing specific tasts. I think it was at www.tomshardware.com or www.guru3d.com. Ill look into it sometime later when im not being really lazy. Im already slacking at work when i should be doing some design work n such. Oh well hehehe its wednesday and tomorrow is the 4th of july. Paid holiday.... WOO HOO!!
