Does overclocking reduce the life of a CPU?

Of course not...... where would you get an idea like that?

A tech guy at the university told me never to overclock, even with proper cooling, because it would make the CPU die in about 2 years.

OC can increase stress on the chip. It depends how much and the size as well. A 0.25 chip can handle more stress than 0.13 chip due to bigger die size. The stress level is calculate based on the die area. Bigger the size, better stress it can handle. By the same token, you can put more stress on the 486 chip than the new P4.

<br><br><< <i>Does overclocking reduce the life of a CPU?</i> >><br><br><BR>Yes it can. 90% of that life span will be dropped due to bad cooling.<BR>If your running the CPU at a high temp it will cause a shorter life span.<BR>That is one reason cooling is such a major detail. <BR>if you can keep it at a decent temp, then there shouldnt be any problems with CPU life.<BR><BR>

Even if it does reduce the lifespan of the processor when it packs in it gives you an excuse to get a new processor. As you are getting a new processor you will have to get a new motherboard which supports it. Ahh well... a new computer. Nothing wrong with that then.
