Umm, let me think. How do I subscribe it... When I'm in big areas like the city core it will go at mayby something good like 30 fps for a while then slow down to mayby 1-15 fps. or when there is a lot of spells being cast it will go to like 3 fps lol. Which is why I turned high visual effects to off.

Okay I have a 850 MHz celeron right now. I can spend 100-150$ Canadain. I've noticed some pauses in games latley and I dont think its my videocard (I already know what videocard I'm getting... I think), I think its my processer. So what do you think I should upgrade too?

??? WTF??!! How would that help? I just defraged my drive, I only got 128 MB ram, and I'm not getting more until I get XP.

As much as I HATE CHE for not giving me a custom rank... I think hes got a point, windows is buggy, you gotta reinstall it every so often.

Let me to explain it better. It slows down for a sec then goes fast again. Mayby its my ram, cause im running out of ram then it gets it from my hardrive which is slower.

Your current install of Windows may not be letting your system use the virtual RAM correctly. What CHE is suggesting is that you reinstall the OS and replace any files that may be missing from removing/deleting programs that might have aided in the allocation of the virtual memory.

Ummm, I dont think its that. Why do you think its that? Why could it not be RAM or something?

Because we all experience degradation of operating system performance over Time, particularly with Win98. It's gets weirder and weirder and slower and slower the longer it sits on you drive.

You made it sound like this problem popped up recently. If the game used to run fine, but now stutters, then your system used to be fast enough but now isn't. In that case, make your system what it used to be

"Your current install of Windows may not be letting your system use the virtual RAM correctly. Sooo.... reinstall windows? No its been doing this since I got it. I really dont think its the os, have yo uever played Neverwinter Nights? Its not that intense graphics..ish. I have it set to fast and 32megs textures. It just goes really fast fro a while and then slows down for a sec. But it only does this in big areas like the city core.

Sounds to me like you could get much more out of it by just changing your virtual memory settings. There's a bunch of stuff about how in the tips.

Read about reducing the swapfile use, and setting the virtual memory size. That horrible pausing is just something that win9x does until you set it up yourself. I doubt that your system is running out of physical memory in games. The virtual memory default settings are downright rediculous in win9x, and will ignore the physical memory at times, writing to the drive and resizing the swapfile when there's no need.

When it does, the video will pause, but the game actually keeps going, which is extreamly anoying. <----Is that the trouble you're having?

A physical RAM upgrade may help you. I was just reinforcing the fact that windows(any version) will degrade over time and reinstalls are inevidable.

<< when there is a lot of spells being cast it will go to like 3 fps lol >>

That makes a bit more sense. More memory should help that. De ja vu...

Note: If you haven't already set up the virtual memory, I'd still suggest doing so.

Okay, Ill reinstall windows 98 and if it doesn't speed up, get more ram. I'll find out if i have pc100 or pc133 and then buy the same speed I am using. Thanks.
