About 6 months ago I bought a Jetway motherboard and a PentiumIII 1g processor, unfortunately the motherboard only supports AGPx1,so I was wandering would this seriously hinder my graphics card performance? (my g.c is a GeForce 2 MX400).Also would it be worthwhile for me to get another m.board which supports AGPx4? (please bear in mind I live in the UK and things are expensive over here!)

The difference between agp 1x and agp 4x is pretty signifcant. At agp 1x I got about 56fps in quake3, and in agp 4x I got somewhere around 140fps. I just ran this test, both with the same settings. The MX400 is a good performance card, and even though it is showing it's age, it is still a good solution for the budget gamer. With that said, the agp 1x is definitely holding you back. I would say a motherboard upgrade would probably blow your mind compared to what you are used to now. In other words, start saving money!

There's quite a big bandwidth difference.

These are the speeds at which cards can transfer data back and forth between the CPU or memory:

PCI = 133 MB/second
AGP 1x = 266MB/second
AGP 2x = 512MB/second
AGP 4x = 1024MB/second
AGP 8x = 2048MB/second

Yeah dude, you're going to want a new motherboard. Right now your card is basically a PCI card stuck in a AGP slot. Getting a AGP 4x compliant board will boost your fps greatly.

Cheers guys! Guess its time for a new motherboard! Are there any m.boards out there that can support pent3 and 4?I currently have a Jetway j-993AN motherboard which supports Celeron up to Pent 3. By the way the guy in the store said this motherboard was AGPx4!
Thanks again! What I mean with Pent 3+4 board is,well I currently have a Pent 3 1G which I have no intention of upgrading at the moment so I want a new board which will support my P3 and will have another slot for a P4 when I decide to upgrade.

Al, of course there are motherboards that support P4's, Intel dont make em for pretties..

Glad to hear your current mb is a 4x AGP.

I would dare to say that a 4x AP slot is 4 times better that a 1x....

Thanks to zogmool Ive discovered my motherboard is AGP 2X ,since it runs at 533 Mb(according to Jetway web site),cant wait to see that deceiving git who sold it to me! He can shove his AGP 4X up his arse!grrrrrr

Max Power, it's really tought to say based on that info. There are socket 370 boards with AGP 2x and there are boards with AGP 4x. Maybe even AGP 1 for all I know. You might want to find the box. Or find some info on the board such as the types of chipsets.

Sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing. I've run into that before, and that's why I buy online now.

"Well, this one over here really kicks ass, so will that be cash or charge?"

If i'm not mistaken , no you cant get a motherboard that supports both pentium III's and Pentium 4's. They are two different types of processors. I've never heard of such a mobo, I could be mistake, but i doubt it.

the ziff socket on p4 boards is socket 472 and the one for p3's and lower are s370 .. the socket for p4s is about half the size as a p3 and lower .. so no there are not boards out that can support both

Interesting... .Thanks for the extra info,I'll check out my bios set-up.If it is AGP4x I might splash out on a Ge-force4Ti 4200.
