Damn, not again, this time my xp pro sys only boots using a floopy - booting from HD causes sys to freeze just after "verifying DMI pool data........" The "master boot record" apparently is corrupt. However, when I go to run the command "fixmbr" in repair console it says I may lose all partitions. So do I try repairing the MBR with fixmbr or can I use fixboot instead? Anyone know about this repair console? I am so frustrated with the buggy crashing OS.

SOYO-K7V Dragon Plus
AthlonXP 1800+
512mb PC2100 DDR
Western Digital 80gb HDD w/8mb buffer
Western Digital 40gb HDD w/4mb buffer
ATI Radeon 8500 64mb
Cmedia 5.1 audio
EPO 16x DVD
LS120 Floppy
Diamond Pro 2060u 21" monitor

Try using the command fdisk mbr. If this isn't availble in the repair console copy the command from a windows 9x/ME box. This should work (fingers crossed)

I just had the same problem and nothing I tried worked... I lost 40G of data. I installed my OS on another drive and after it was all said and done the drive came up as unalocated, aka blank, unformatted, no partition. You might try a program called partition magic, it repairs lost partitions. However it didn't work for me. I learned a valuable lesson....backup, backup, backup, backup!

I dunno, someone mentioned how Windows XP wouldn't work (well) on AMD processors...

EDIT: See this post: XP and AMD processors

You are the "someone" who mentioned it, @COMPUTER_HACK, and there's no truth to it. Next time you slander a company be prepared to back it up. We are not going to have salespeople trolling our forums with bullshit, just an FYI and not an accusation.

I have ran XP for over a year now and I have had one crash(caused by reg tweaks!!) That ************************ about AMD and XP not working together. Didn't you know XP was optimized for AMD processors meaning Microsoft and AMD worked together on the development of XP.

XP works great for me had no problems been running it for probably 5 or 6 months and it has not crashed yet plus the features like system restore i think is cool, using 9X i always had regular crashes so i would have to say out of all of the windows OSs XP has to be the best and most stable and better featured

I have used a bootleg version of WinXP Pro for over a year now and have had no problems at all. It is the easiest OS to install and maintain. There are occastionally compatabilty problems, but they can be solved 99% of the time. As for this OS not working on AMD processors.....

Athlon XP
Windows XP

They even have similiar names :-p

I haven't used an Intel processor since my Pentium 166Mhz. I have installed Windows XP on about 5 computers this year, and they have all been AMD systems!
