Ok this is off topic, but im running a western digital 20 gig hd @ 5400 rpm, how much difference would a 7400 rpm harddrive make? oh and does a good motherboard make much of a difference in speed?

A 7200 rpm drive will make a noticable difference. With most 7200 rpm drives they are still running at ATA100, and most mobos will support that. Some of the newer mobos will support ATA133, on a raid controller. At this time Maxtor is the only company offering an ATA133 drive.

20GB @ 5400rpm. I'm about 90% sure that your Hard Drive is ATA66. An upgrade to something like a Maxtor 40GB 7200rpm ATA133 drive will be a huge improvement. My last HD was a IBM 22.6GB 7200rpm ATA66. It totally sucked compared to the one I have now, and they one your using is even slower. The 40GB Maxtor drive will probably cost you about $80....definetly worth the performance Improvement.

It is definitely within the topic - if Bush bomb Iraq, thats off the topic. You will gain better performance as both GNXtreme and Shiznit sworn by it. Any 7200rpm with ATA100/133 will improve the way you compute. Good luck.
