View Full Version : Longhorn
I have been running longhorn and if someone said this is XP 2nd ED..I wouldn't 2nd guess them. Like XP Corp the OS is slow at first but if you do the same reg tweaks and file tweaks then before you know it the thing runs great. IE6.05 on it sucks but I am a Opera and Netscape 7 user so I have them on there and it works great. All the games I played(Madden 2003, GTA3, NFSHP2, and the Doom 3 Alpha) look great and run about the same even though Longhorn uses DX9.0 and can't be updated( denied everytime). For being an Alpha it rocks. Hopefully though when they put this out they fix the speed issue so we don't have to tweak so much(The should leave somemistakes because what's a computer without tweaking..Oh yeah, its Linux!!!).
Where did you get the beta from?? I want to try it!!
I'll put it on Kazaa tonight for you. I will call it LH_beta.

Last I read a couple weeks ago, Longhorn was still in it's Alpha stage, so that is most likely what you have. That article also said it would be WinXP 2nd Edition. The actual beta isn't to be released for months yet. Post a screenshot that says beta (don't be using Paintshop either :-p )
I will do it tonight and I will try to use Grabber2k on the My Computer Properties. What about Coral Draw!!LOL

If you do have a legit copy of Longhorn, I hope you know your going to have to send me a copy :-)
Sorry I haven't had time to post it but hopefully I will get it on here tonight. If you do want a copy try winMX because Kazaa sucks. Everytime I would go into My Shared Files TaskManager would show my CPU % at 100 and Kernel was getting up there so I had to uninstall kazaa.
do you have a FTP dump you can upload it to

I think he's full of crap....he can't even post a screen shot and it's been 2 weeks
There are some convincing screen shots at http://61.175.211.198/vdown/newsinfo/win2004beta.htm so i am guessing that there must be a beta of longhorn somewhere
Hey!! I have been having problems with my Computer and I am a very busy person. I do not work tomorrow or Sun so I will sit my ass in front of my computer for a couple hrs for you and show you a screen shot to show you I have it. I have had problems with Kazaa and Grokster due to Hybrids all over my computer because of them so I switched to winMX. I will get it up for you this weekend.
I have Longhorn (finally) and it is wicked. They have nubilised it a bit but you can change it back to normal style.

Where did you get it from? Screenshots please.
Actually, Longhorn is expected to come out retail in early 2005 or so. In the meantime, Microsoft will be releasing Windows XP Second Edition to fill the gap between 2003-2005.<BR><BR>I have a copy of Longhorn, but I don't have a spare system to try it on. I'm not willing to put it on the main sys because we all know how wonderfully buggy Microsoft Alphas can be. You can get a copy of it from Kazaa using Sig2Dat. I'm not too sure if the current version out now will be developed into Second Edition or the actualy Longhorn (which will probably be called something else).
Just search it on Google there are tonnes of places you can get it. The problem is that Microsoft close the sites down quite quickly

All these people who swear they have longhorn....all I've been asking for is screen shots....and I have yet to get any.
its out there shiznit ... just look around for it .... this beta has been out for some time now. and its not hard to get.
Isn't XP ver2 going to be released before Longhorn? Longhorn kernel is far more advanced than XP ever could get. Unless they changed the code names...They did that before. (Remember Windows 3.1?)
<br><br><< <i>Isn't XP ver2 going to be released before Longhorn? Longhorn kernel is far more advanced than XP ever could get. It sounds nice and all but Microsoft is really going out of their way to make their software bulletproof in terms of pirating. I read about this new technology (I forget the name) that's actually build into the processors (AMD and Intel have already agreed to this) which will simply not allow illegal software to run. Microsoft will also have control over your internet bandwidth, as well as the ability to see what you are receiving and sending (if they aren't already...) as well as other <b>horrible</b> intrusions of privacy. Linux is sounding sweeter and sweeter...

<BR><< <i>Longhorn is supposed to be 64bit</i> >><BR><BR><BR><BR>It isn't supposed to be it just an run on 64bit proessors. Anyway it is exactly the same as XP but with another skin (called Plex). THere is also a information bar that uns along the side of the screen. <BR><BR>Oh btw the version i have is Release Candidate 2
Damn, I was pretty sure it was gonna be 64bit. There are 64bit versions of XP.. so I figured they would incorporate it into their new OS. I read that somewhere too so -shrug-
Dont believe everything you read!!! (except here of course) <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Thanks for those links chrisguy...too bad none of them work. There will be a 64bit version of Windows XP due out in August/September. Longhorn will not be 64bit. It will be 32bit so that Intel Can still run it on it's P4/P5 Chips since they still claim they aren't going to follow after AMD.

I did, and everyplace I go I find bad links. It's okay. I'm not going to install Longhorn because all it is, is a set of new features you can visually see, but most of them don't work. I need a fully functioning OS. Another thing is people keep calling it a Beta...It's only an Alpha.

"Thanks for those links chrisguy...too bad none of them work. " They do work shiznit. There links to channels on IRC networks which have it. If u dont have mIRC installed then they wont work. <BR><BR>"Mirosoft keep shuting down all the sites, ust search on Google and you will find a site with it on" I highly doubt you'll find any website that has it ever.
<br><br><< <i>I highly doubt you'll find any website that has it ever. </i> >><br><br><BR>Actually dude, I got my copy from a website. Needless to say, I was pretty surprised too.
SCREENSHOTS!!!!!! I WANT SOME TO SEE SOME SCREENSHOTS!<BR><BR>or i'll shoot myself <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have a screenshot for it actually...<BR><BR><img src="http://www.moddev.net/other/longhorn3.gif"><BR><BR>I haven't run it though it's really not all that impressive. The final version is to be optimized for 266mhz with 64mb RAM. Yes, you read that correctly. Microsoft is finally taking a hint. I know this because my friend at Microsoft has access to all their internal projects and he gave me some information (including that pic).
it looks like a windows xp copy with a hat<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> <BR><BR>"HAT" = sidebar <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

Another seksay thing about Longhorn will be WinFS, which is the file system replacing NTFS that is structured around an SQL-style database. SQL-style queries will be used to retrieve information from the disk. Although the alpha has it implemented, current systems don't/can't support it yet so the result is an NTFS/FAT32 standard routine that is slow and cruddy because Longhorn hasn't been optimized for that. This new WinFS is the reason Longhorn will be so powerful and desirable.
i am just waiting for .net Server <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> .... that long horn looks like just another waste of resources <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">
Yeah, the alpha version doesn't have all the key features that Longhorn is supposed to boast. Why they 'advertise' it then? I don't know.
Lakario
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
They didn't advertise it, that's just it. Leave it to someone on the inside to undermine microsoft's progress.

Microsoft already dropped the support for WinFS for longhorn, so, you wont see WinFS on longhorn!

Hopefully I can get a free copy when it finally comes out. A coworker of mine is leaving at the end of the month to work as a developer for the Windows Installer. I told him that if my Windows installation fails I will now know who to blame! :)
So... How do you all think it will compare with uh... anything else? I've only seen one little video and to me it looked like it might just take up more resources than anything else? I was wondering how that will effect whatever you are doing...?

Longhorn Alpha Is Available to MSDN Subscribers
By Mary Jo Foley
November 14, 2003
It appears that subscribers to the Microsoft Developer Network can obtain the version of Longhorn distributed to attendees of Microsoft's recent Professional Developers Conference. The PDC Build is ready for MSDNers to download.

here are links for two screanshots for all those doubters that people outside msdn have longhorn (or if you want to see what it looks like)

Well, that is possible. There were leaks of longhorn. you can get it on kazaa right now.
how's the perfomance? have you done any benchies with this OS? let us know how it all works out. if it's doing better than the others and it's still an alpha then i have high hopes for this OS. could it be the next 2k? that has to be the last great os microsoft came out with. i mean when you base your newest (xp at the time) os on the same kernel you know it's worth something.

xp is good.. you cant really criticize it since most of you guys areeeeee using it... (i think?) well it's only great once you've tweaked it with registry tweaks and cut down on resource hogging services!

I'm allowed to criticize XP 'cause I'm not using it. :p I'm going to stay on 2k until it becomes what 95 is today. All XP is is 2k with a facelift, and lots of extra baggage.

Ahh dun worry. Its only a non confirmed rumour.
Acording the M$ website it only requires modest resorces. Modest compared to a terrabyte.
Sorry.. "EDIT" The link abouve craped itself it seems.
Heres another.

There seems to be a lot of talk around about this terrabyte subject.

Yeah, I remember reading in PC Magazine about how much space it needs. I think I've already mentioned that it was going to be huge. They were talking about how they would recommend that people use standby or hibernate instead of shutdown/restart due to the fact that it would have to load anywhere between 2 and 6gb of the kernel just for a minimal boot.
trying to get a beta version i "got ahold of" to work. came to me as a .bin file almost 900mb large. if i get it changed to an .iso and loaded i'll let you know how it goes.
