WindowsXP is a great OS, but one pet peeve of mine is how it can be to navigate through each menu, and sub menu. The delay is just long enough to be annoying, but luckily there is an easy way to speed things up if you want.

Click the "Start" button and go to "Run", type "Regedit" and press the the "Ok" button. From there go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER -> Control Panel -> Desktop. Once you're there, go to the MenuShoDelay string and get ready to edit the value which should be "400". To speed up the delay between menu's opening, change this number to 0 and reboot.

After this registry tweak you should notice that menu's pop up instantly when you select them!
Hey Colin, your weekly tips are a big help, and help increase my computer's efficiency - which is always a good thing. You had a tip about a month ago telling us how to "Get faster menus." You mentioned that it was something for WinXP, but I got it to work for Win98SE. I recently reformatted, and am still using Win98SE. I went back to redo the menu tweak, but I couldn't find the MenuShoDelay string, even after carefully following your instructions. I even tried making a new string, but that didn't work either. Is there a way that I can get it back? Also, on your most recent tip about getting rid of the "Shortcut to" text, I also was unable to find out where this was. I don't know if something's messed up in my computer or what, but I would really appreciate it if you could tell me how to get (especially) the faster menus tweak back. Thanks.
-Sterfry
[E=Harold_and_Bob@hotmail.com]
