Over at MaximumPC they have a few GeForceFX benchmarks posted.

GeForce FX

Quake3 Demo001, 1600x1200 2xAA: 209fps

UT 2003 Asbestos, 1600x1200 2xAA: 140fps

3DMark Game4, 1600x1200 2xAA: 41fps

Radeon 9700 Pro

Quake3 Demo001, 1600x1200 2xAA: 147fps

UT 2003 Asbestos, 1600x1200 2xAA: 119fps

3DMark Game4, 1600x1200 2xAA: 45fps

I'm very surprised the Radeon 9700 Pro beat the GeForceFX in the Nature demo of 3DMark2001SE! I guess memory bandwidth is more important then GPU power there. It'll be interesting to see how well the GeForceFX performs when it comes out!

I know I can't wait for my review sample to come in!!!

ATI is supposed to have an updated card coming out around the same time that the GeForce 4 FX arrives. If the FX can't even beat the Radeon 9700 PRO, it looks like the FX may not be in the top spot very long. Another thing....If it's perfmance isn't to much of an improvement, they better not plan on selling these cards at $399. I am against buying the fastest video cards out because of their cost, but I was actually saving up for a new FX just because I thought it would be an ATI killer....I guess I'll have to wait for the Radeon 10k

After careful review of the Maximum PC*** article, I think that the new Radeon will kick the ass of the GeForce 4 FX. ATI's GPU core shrink, and refinements should allow their GPU to run at the same speed as the FX, and their introduction of 256 bit DDR II should give them a massive memory bandwith improvement. Possibly doubling what they have now. My vote, and my $400 will probably go to ATI if they can show me some mind blowing performance. of course I'm also looking for a new monitor....particularly a 21" sony monitor, and it would work really nice with a powerful Graphics card behind it.

***Maxiumum PC is by far the best magazine on the planet earth. Everyone in these forums better be a subscriber, if not, your a real disappointment. I pay for a subscription, but if I see a copy on a store shelf before it get it, I WILL BUY IT. That's loyalty :-)

<< ATI is supposed to have an updated card coming out around the same time that the GeForce 4 FX arrives. >>

Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if ATi releases the R350 when nVIDIA releases their NV31 at CeBit! Both companies love stealing each other's thunder.

<< ATI's GPU core shrink, and refinements should allow their GPU to run at the same speed as the FX, >>

We have to becareful there. Apparently, moving to 0.13 micron technology is very difficult. Intel, AMD, TSMC (the place where nVIDIA makes their GPU's) all had some major teething problems when they moved to 0.13 micron. I sure hope ATi doesn't, not because I like ATi more it's that competition is good for us the consumers!

<< 256 bit DDR II >>

That I agree with you. I think one of the main problems with the GeForceFX is, it's very memory bandwidth limited. I guess it was too difficult to implement a 256bit memory bus for the GeForceFX or if they could, it would take too long.

Shiznit, you do know that the GeForceFX will have a very short lifespan right? Apparently the successor to the NV30 will be out a few months later! It sure is exciting for videocard enthusiasts!

<< HOW COME MAXIMUM PC HAS A WORKING GEFORCE FX AND YOU DO NOT?????? Man, I want one real bad myself!

I'm not really sure about the lifespan of the card. I haven't really been keeping track of the latest roadmaps of either company. My up and coming pride and joy will be the Athlon 64. I've been waiting almost 2 years for it. The original release date was supposed to be October 10th. If that is the case, and it isn't going to be a big performer, I don't think it is going to be a big seller. I've seen a few places that said it should cost $399. I'm not willing to pay that much. Some retailers/distributors will have cards made and available in the 3rd week this month. They are expected to be hard to come by, but hopefully, you'll be able to get one. You can mail me one and I'll review it for you :-)

<< I'm not really sure about the lifespan of the card. >>

Well remember the NV30 is suppose to compete with the Radeon 9700 Pro, not the R350 which is going to be released probably in the spring.

<< My up and coming pride and joy will be the Athlon 64. I sure hope it lives up to expectation and that AMD does not have any supply problems.

<< I've seen a few places that said it should cost $399. >>

Top end models always cost an arm and a leg. I'm sure there will be some slower more moderately priced hammers when it's introduced.

<< Some retailers/distributors will have cards made and available in the 3rd week this month. I'm not sure Max would be cool with that, but when they are available I will do my best to try and get one for a forum contest!
