Me and my neighbor want to make a little private network using crossover cables. We both have the same NIC. i have Win XP pro and he has win 98. we set up everything and the networking wizard in xp. on my task bar it shows a connection (XP). but the computers cant find each other. I know you supposed to do something else like in the OS but im tottaly in networking stuff. Please help.

is win 98 compatible with win XP.

Thanx in advance.
Yes, WinXP can network with Win98.

I have never used the WinXP Networking Wizard myself, I usually enter all teh values manually. First your computers must use the same Domain or Workgroup, otherwise you'll be able to see him but he won't see you. Secondly, did you setup your TCP/IP? Install the NetBUI protocol, it'll really help you out when doing simple networking.

Get back to me with those answers above and I'll see if I can help you out a bit more.

Sorry for the late reply,

I heard that Netbui is not compatible with networked games and stuff.

and how do you set up the TC/IP stuff

and yeah i already made the same workgroup stuff

thanks in advance

<< I heard that Netbui is not compatible with networked games and stuff. >>

It's not generally used for games. Games usually use IPX or TCP/IP.

Will any of these computers in the network have access to the internet? If they do, you'll have to use the 192.168.xxxx.xxx numbers.

On the first computer, make the IP address 192.168.0.1 and give the second computer the ip address 192.168.0.2. Enter 255.255.255.0 for the subnet mask. Now you'll be able to ping each other (open up dos prompt and type Ping 192.168.0.x (x the computer you want to ping). If you get a response then you set it up properly, if it times out something is wrong.

IPX usually sets itself up, you won't have to configure it.

If you want to share files, you'll have to share either drives and folders. If you don't know how to share drives, let me know and I'll give you instructions.

<< Glockillusion you mean your Win98 rig cannot see the WinXP machine in Network Neighbourhood? >>

Yes(sorry about the bad english in the last message) and my windows 98 computer won't log onto the network either.

<< Have you installed the NetBUI protocol? >>

I can't find NetBUI, do you mean NetBEUI, if you do then yes I have installed it.

I forgot to tell you in the last message that I get this error on my windows98 rig, when it trys to log onto the network

No domain Server was available to validate your password. You may not be able to gain access to some network resources

I haven't set up any passwords and it shows the domain/workgroup and my windows98 rig in the Network Neighbourhood but it doesn't show my windows Xp rig.

Thanks in Advance.
Glockillusion can your XP machine see the Win98? How many domains does XP see?

<< Glockillusion can your XP machine see the Win98? >>

No it does not see the Win98 rig.
How many domains does XP see? >>

I don't think it sees any but it still logs onto the network.(that probably doesn't make sense but I'm new to networking and I have only had windows Xp for a few months)
Glockillusion ok, I hope you don't mind but we're going to be moving slowly... Setting up a network is not a "simple" thing to do.

Now my work computer is using Win2k Pro, not WinXP but the concepts I'm trying to relay should be the same.

First open up windows explorer and follow this path you see below.

On the right hand window, what do you see? You should see at least one domain there.

Open up any domain you see and do you now see your computers?

This is what happens when I click on the domain(The annoying thing is that the network use to work before I formatted my windows98 rig)

<< Glockillusion you cannot link to an image on your computer unless you have ISS installed >>

sorry I didn't know I couldn't link to an image, The image showed up on my computer.

<< If you want me to host it, just shoot over an e-mail. >>

don't worry about it I'll just tell you what the error was.

Mshome is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource .Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available

This doesn't make sense because the computer that I am on is the administrator of the network/server.
Hmm... Now you're sure the other computer is using Mshome as the domain right? It may be case sensitive I don't remember if it is.

Yes I'm sure they are both using Mshome.
You know what I do when my networking gets all screwed up? I uninstall all tlhe protocols and start over. That in the long run will probably be easier then trying to figure out what's wrong.

Hey Colin, I tried what you said I uninstalled all the protocols and then reinstalled them and It still doesn't work.
Maybe I didn't uninstall all of the network files properly before I reinstalled them, Is there a way to get rid of all the network files completely off both computers.(probably a stupid question but I don't know much about networks)

Thanks for all your help.
You know what Glockillusion, let me setup Win98 on my test box at home... Then I can probably give you some better pointers and I'll include pictures as well.

Sorry for the late reply, my freind was lagging it.

OK we got our network thing working, but only some games work all the way through. Unreal Tournament 2003 worked fine. But when we play Warcraft 3, and i (winxp) set up the server, it disconnects the win 98 rig, and it says fatal error and some other stuff on the win xp machine. When we set up a server on the win 98 rig its plays fine for a while but then the win xp rig just closes the game out nowhere and goes back to the desktop.

and when we go the network neighborhood the win 98 can see win xp computer, but the win 98 cant see win 98 rig. so the only one sharing files is win xp, cause it cant see the win 98

thax in advance

Okay, so this is a cop-out answer, but it works. I just recently set up a home network between my Win98 PC and my roomies Win 98 Laptop.

IMO, the best resource out there is www.homepcnetwork.com/ . This site is absolutly awesome and helped us a great deal.

For some reason we couldn't get it set up with a crossover cable, but for 15 bucks I think we got an 8 port hub and two CAT5 cables.

Works like a charm now.

-- The Glass Walker
