Quick question for ya....how do you justify the price of the 3.06Ghz P4 considering that if you were to sit down on my system, you would see no difference in performance?

There seems to be a lot of questions on how to overclock the Pentium 4 these days. Well hopefully I'll be able to answer most questions with this quicky "P4 Overclocking Guide".

Because the Pentium 4 is multiplier locked by default, the only way to overclock the processor is to raise the FSB. To do that, you'll have to enter your computer's BIOS by hitting the "Delete" key when your system is counting memory when you first turn on your computer. Once you're inside there you'll need to find your Frequency Control section in your BIOS. Unfortunately most motherboards out there are a bit different from each other so I can't really tell you exactly where that is.

Currently my test rig is using the Abit BG7 (i845G) and I find my frequency control options in "Soft Menu III". Here's how it looks...

As we can see, there are a lot of options availalbe but what exactly do they do?

The first option we have is Ext. Clock (CPU/AGP/PCI).

That's where we increase the FSB, you want to go easy and push it up 2-3 MHz at a time until your system becomes unstable. When that happens, you may need to adjust some of the other options available.

The next option we have is PCI Bus Frequency. Everything in the computer is tied to the system bus (FSB). When you raise the FSB you usually also raise the AGP and PCI speeds and certain devices may not like the added stress from overclocking. If a AGP/PCI peripheral cannot handle the speed, it can cause your computer to run unstable or stop you from POSTing! Usually when overclocking, it's a good idea to remove all your PCI cards to eliminate any possible problems. After you find your maximum speed, then start plugging the PCI cards back in and see if any of them give you problems.

We wrote about how network cards affect overclocking and you may want to read it to get an ideal about what I'm talking about.

The next option we have is DRAM H/W Strap and DRAM Ratio (CPURAM). Despite the fancy names that simply sets how fast the memory is to run. Because the P4 is usually bandwidth limited when teamed up with the single channel DDR, you want your memory running as fast as it can. If you set your memory to run faster then the FSB your memory may max out much quicker then the processor. If that happens, you may want to slow your memory down a bit.

After playing with the above settings if you're still running into problems it may be time to raise the CPU voltage.

Abit does not really allow you to add too much voltage to the processor, but some other boards give you more power. Depending on what type of cooling you're using and which stepping P4 you have you may only want to increase your voltage a bit, or you may want to increase it a lot.

If you're using a smaller heatsink or the stock cooler, you probably don't want to add more then 10% more voltage. If you have something a bit more hardcore or are using watercooling adding up to 20%.

Memory is also something that maxes out very quickly, luckily most motetherboards allow you to raise the DIMM voltage as well.

The test motherboard for example allows you to raise the voltage from 2.5V to a maximum of 2.8V. When you start noticing errors like 3d applications dropping back to desktop, it usually means your memory is running too fast and raising the voltage should help stabilize things.

Epox boards usually allow for up to 3.2V, but you really don't want to give that much voltage to your parts for prolonged periods of time.

Hopefully this quicky guide will be able to point the members of the PCStats forums in the right direction when it comes to Pentium 4 overclocking. Let us know how high you get your systems and drop in the Benchmarks forum!

If any experienced users have anything to contribute, feel free to add anything I have forgotten!

Plus, PCStats is actually much bigger then it looks. Sites our size usually have a well developed forum already, but unfortunately we've neglected that part for the last little while. I don't really forsee AMD retaking the speed crown any time soon. Perhaps the Barton will be able to challange but Intel will be able to respond very quickly after.

<< Quick question for ya....how do you justify the price of the 3.06Ghz P4 considering that if you were to sit down on my system, you would see no difference in performance? >>

danny16866's system would be faster then yours Shiznit. In any application that requires a lot of bandwidth (like Pro 3d graphics, database work, etc) his rig may even walk circles around your AthlonXP 2400+. In apps like word processing and internet surfing his again would be faster, but the margin would be much smaller because latency is more important and that's where a longer pipeline suffers.

To be totally honest, as a company AMD is much more "likeable" as they seem to listen to their consumers. I know I like AMD as a company more then I like Intel because Intel seems more arrogant.

Intel however is the more innovative of the two. They're usually first to introduce new technology from CPU care to actual core enhancements. Yes AMD's hammer is the first processor to incorporate x86-64 technology but we'll have to wait and see if that will be successful. The best technology if it's unsupported is still useless.

Remember one thing guys, neither company loves you they're only trying to make $$$.

So lets completely take your Pro 3D Graphics (CAD) and database work and throw it out the window because it doesn't apply to our situation. I'm sure we all use Word Processing and Internet explorer. These are not two areas where I wouldn't start arguing about the performance of a CPU. I know very well that if I go the launch these two programs, they are up and ready to run before I even clicking on the Icon. I know you are talking about all your benchmarks whether it be content creation, or the all important 3D Mark, but what matters is real world performance.

I also like your comment about walking circles around my rig. That is being a little loose with words. His rig can walk circles around a Pentium, a PII, and even a PIII in most applications. It has to be able to do something Many times faster before you can start making comments like that. I know that is how you Intel fans work. When you feel threatened you just pump up the Mhz, and all the ************************ talking until you start to feel better about your position. That's okay, all of us more educated AMD fans know that Mhz mean nothing, and your arguments mean even less Have a nice day
Colin
06-15-04, 01:25 PM
You know what, you're right Shiznit I may have went overboard on that one.

I know you're very PRO AMD and that's fine, but you have to be a bit more open minded as well. Yes, there is an MHz myth, but there is also an IPC myth as well. The way AMD is portraying IPC, that sounds way more important then anything else. You need a combination of both in order to get good performance.

I hated the P4 core when it first came out 2 years ago, but to be honest, Intel has delivered what they said. Remember, right from the beginning Intel stated that the P4 core needs high MHz to perform well and I would say the P4 is a pretty good chip now.

Avid6eek

Actually, I am very open minded. I do give in to the fact that Intel has the fastest CPU right now, but I still don't like Intel. It really isn't the CPU I hate, it's more of the company I hate. They try to boss everyone in the semiconductor business around.

wolfang is right i dont stand beyond anybody i just go for better speed and powah !!!
|| True...kinda like forum administators. When you go against what they like, they tell you to be "open minded" || i dont think thats what he intended he just wanted to say that you dont have to stick around something if you can get better. and about the $$$ thing he said as well he's right if AMD gets something thats has fast ad intel or faster and better to O/C i would emidialtly wait for the price to drop really and at last I know that is how you Intel fans work. When you feel threatened you just pump up the Mhz, and all the ************************ talking until you start to feel better about your position who are you to talk about people you dont know one bit or met are like i hope your ashamed of that post really i do know people that talk in the same way but i dont think they are psycich or something so i hope you regret that part !!!and same for the admin part !!!
