View Full Version : How to change MB?
I am getting ready to buy a new MB and I want to know how to swap Motherboards out without losing any data. I know there are things I can remove from regedit but not sure which ones I should remove from regedit. If anyone knows let me know please and thank you!
Hey Juan! What motherboard will you be getting?

I find that if you were to move to the same brand chipset motherboard (ie. KT266A to KT400) you can simply have to reinstall the motherboard drivers. The VIA 4in1's do have an uninstall feature, so perhaps when you turn your current computer off for good you may want to uninstall and hope for the best when you move.

Oh, very important turn off the service Shell Hardware Detection before you swap mobo's. That is the stupid MS service that monitors your system hardware configuration.

WinXP is much better then previous MS OS's when changing hardware.
I am thinking about getting the Chaintech 7NJS w/AMD 2600+ 333FSB and a Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro Ultimate ED. I have been thinking of going to the Corporate Bastards called Intel but I think my wits tell me No. Maybe you can persuade me Colin?!!! HaHa

For shame I know.

<< I am thinking about getting the Chaintech 7NJS w/AMD 2600+ 333FSB and a Sapphire Radeon 9700 Pro Ultimate ED. >>

That sounds pretty good in terms of value actually. You'd be very hard pressed to come up with an Intel configuration that offrs better value. I'm actually playing with an AthlonXP 2700+, MSI nForce2 board and ATi Radeon 9700 Pro and I'm very impressed by the power and speed so far! Honestly it makes me want to go back to AMD!

The Chaintech board uses the nForce2 chipset though so I think you'll need to format!

Hey Juan, make sure you post some benchmarks in the new Benchmarks forum when you get your new parts!
Mainly I just wanted to see if I have to format because if I do I am probably going to get another 80GB WD Sp Ed w/8mb cache and Stripe them. I just read the article about the nForce2 Shuttle and that thing sounds cool!!
If I were to put a wager on it, I would bet you'd have to format.

RAID is cool, but myself I will never use RAID-0 again. Had a bad experience and lost all my MP3's (40GB!) once because one of my IBM Deskstar 75GXP died (I know...).
Mainly the reason why I use stripe is I do alot of Video editing stuff and it takes some of the stress out of it.

Everytime I bought a new motherboard, it had a different chipset. (Ali -> KT333 -> nForce2) Each time Windows would not boot after the new mobo was installed so I had to reformat each time.
