Hey aceMan, welcome to PCStats!

Hmm, that's an odd problem you're having. When did that start happening? Was it after you installed a piece of software/hardware? Did you perhaps tweak your system?

How old is this computer?

This happened to me a couple times and I did find out way. I had a bad fan on my heatsink. Replaced the fan and the restarts never occured again!!!

Also something that might cause it is if you are trying to make a piece of memory run with a lower Cas Lat than it says it is. With PC2100 I have never seen this problem but when I stuck my PC2700 Kingston stick in restarts happend all the time. The reason being is before the 2700 I had my Cas at 2 but the 2700 would only handle 2.5 and so I had to turn Cas back to 2.5 and that stoped restarts as well. Really I would think this would be your problem because you wouldn't get past the Windows startup screen. I am glad to hear everything is working for you now and enjoy XP!!!

guys this is !!!NOT!!! a hardware problem.... I have also had this problem in XP atleast 3 or 4 times, they have all been after i installed XP and it used to keep restarting, again typicaly while i was using the net. Me and my friend Bios have also experienced these spontaneous restarts and have concluded it is NOT down to hardware.
The problem strangely sorted its self out i havnt had a fresh install of XP for about 2 months now, and it hasnt done it since, but i was talking to a tech once and he gave me a link to a site that explained why it was doing it ive lost the link but i know it will sort its self out soon. If i find out any more info ill post it, sorry at the moment i honestly cant remember all i know is its a software problem/os problem NOT a hardware problem.

Thanks, Cons
