View Full Version : USB problems
Okay, this is the one big problem on my computer. I bought this thing about a month ago, all in seperate parts. I installed everything as it should be. But when I tried installing my webcam, joystick, and digital camera, they all don't function. When I plug them in, I get the error
"An error occurred during the installation of the device

The installation failed because a function driver was not specified for this device instance"

I checked under system devices, and it says both drivers for USB are functioning properly. So I tried installing it again off my mainboard cd, but I got some plug and play error (the bar at the top of the box said plugandplaydevices, and the actual message was a string of numbers). So after that, I tried uninstalling one of the drivers. But when I tried to reinstall it, I could not, the windows installer said it could not find the drivers needed. So now I have one USB port that supposedly functions, and one uninstalled one, with no devices working on either. Any ideas on what to do?
All your USB deviceas might be taking up the USB memory bandwidth, this is quite a common problem especially if you have an ADSL USB modem. The way to solve it is to buy a PCI USB card which will give you some more USB bandwidth
Ed the first thing I would do is reinstall your motherboard drivers first. That should reinstall your USB drivers for you.

Iceman may be right you may have used up all your bandwidth but I don't think that's the problem...

Ed, I mean no offence here, but do you know how to install drivers? You may have to point Windows to a directory inside the CD, drivers are usually not located in the root directory of CD's...
No offence taken Mr Colin. I think I'm installing the right file, it's called USB20, and it has a setup logo on it. I can't seem to find any other files that would look like the are drivers, what are the file extensions for drivers anyways? I'll have to give reinstalling the motherboard's drivers a shot afterwards, but would that lose my data or change anything?

Okay, and I've also just tried connecting the LED's to my mobo, but the pin arrangement in the manual and silkscreened on the mobo are different. Haha, anyways, do all the plugs have polarity on them? Or only the LED's? And how can I tell which side is positive on the plugs? One side has an arrow, but there's no + or - signs on the plugs.
what os are you using?
what motherboard are you using?

and have you tried running these devices on a non usb 2.0 port?

just about all motherboards that have usb 2.0 also have some of the original usb ports as well.

also have you tried moving some of your cards to different slots or anything like this?
Ok, here's my system specs, nothing much in the thing as it's not totally ready yet:

ECS K7S5A ATX SIS735 SOCKETA DDR/SDRAM ATA100 AGP 5PCI AMR W /AUDIO & LAN
NETLINK 18IN 300W ATX VS42B CASE /W FRONT USB PORT P4 READY BLUE BEZEL
Athlon XP 2100+
ATI Radeon 8500 LE 128mb retail
Windows 2000 Proffesional

All the devices that I've tried to install work on my old computer, I dunno what USB version it is.

What's the difference between the original and 2.0 ports?

None of my cards have or can be moved, as I only have the Graphics AGP card, and there is only one AGP slot
usb 2.0 transfers faster.

your motherboard doesnt support usb 2.0 so i believe you are installing the wrong drivers. the cd that comes with your motherboard is most likely a generic ecs motherboard cd and has drives for all ecs amd boards.

also ecs motherboards are not that high of quality boards so ... i dont think there is much else that can be done except make sure you are installing the correct driver on the board.

my cousin has that same board and he has all kinds of problems with it like his nic not working right. I dont want to be rude but ... you get what you pay for when it comes to motherboards and most other hardware.
Blah, I just hooked up the USB headers, to give it a try, but I get the same problem. You think I should try reinstalling the motherboard's drivers first, or Windows 2000? Which really contains the USB drivers?
