View Full Version : MSI Pro5 - How far can i go?
I have a MSI Pro5 (MS-6545) and in the User Guide
says it supports CPU Pentium IV 1.6 GHZ ... ...2.GHZ and UP.

How up?

What is the fastest processor i can get in my board ?

Thank you.
Hey Helder! Welcome to PCStats!

The MSI 850 Pro 5 can support any current 400/533 MHz based P4 (up to 3.06 GHz so far). If you're looking for a budget processor, those C1 1.8A's (if you can find one). Make sure you get some high quality RDRAM for your motherboard if you plan to overclock... Don't get the Kingston PC1066 that's what I'm using (on my TH7II-RAID) and it barely does 145 MHz FSB at 1066 mode. I hear the Samsung PC1066 RDRAM is suppose to be kick ass though.

Helder did you buy the mobo already?
Thanks for your reply Colin, you were very helpful.

Did i buy what?
Np, that's what I'm here for!

I'm assuming you bought the board already right?
Yes... it's already installed on the pc ;-)

But maybe you can help me with other prob
with other pc.

There was a big storm with lightnings and after
the storm my pc didn't work anymore.

1- The display works fine because when i unplugged it from the
pc i get the usual no signal msg.

2 - When i turn the pc on, the lights go on, i don't hear the usual
beep it does when it starts and the display is always black.

3 - But the cd and rw work. I mean, i click on the eject buttons
and they work.

My question is:
Can this be a prob of the videocard ?
I already switched the videocard and the result is the same.

Or can it be the 'electrical box'
(i call it 'electrical box because i don't know the name in english, sorry,
but i think you know what i mean)

Thanks again

<< There was a big storm with lightnings and after the storm my pc didn't work anymore. >>

It sounds like there was a surge of electricity and that's not good news Helder!!! It sounds like your motherboard, PSU, CPU may be dead! Look closely at the PCB of the motherboard, are there any buldging capacitors or burn marks? Do you smell burnt plastic?

Are you using a surge protector and how's your house's wiring?
Hei Colin,

I'm sure it's alive, it's a strong motherboard

I just smell it and it 'smells fine' and i didn't see
any burn mark.

The wires in my house are... i don't know how they are.
It's normal the electricity goes down if there is
lightning... what is rare.

Yes i have a protection, i don't know how you call it
in english, that thing where i plug all the electrical cables
from the computer has a ON / OFF switch. And it was on ;-)

You're it's dead?
It's impossible to find a motherboard for a PIII now.

Thank you Colin
Well I'm glad your system is ok...

What I mean about the electricity is, if your wiring is bad, the power your computer recieves will not be clean and can possibly kill your comp. Even Surge Protectors cannot protect against that you'll need to get yourself a UPS of some sort. I know my current apartment had really bad electricity, I get brown outs all the time but my APC SmartUPS 1000 saves my but because it cleans the electricity that comes to my computer.

My friend's house is even worse then mine, he does not have any ground in his wirings! Surge protectors are useless without a ground!
Humm, i'll have to agree with you when you say
my motherboard is dead...

Because if the lights of the computer go ON, and the
'fan' of the 'electrical box' also works this can only be
the motherboard right?

Well, this lead me to another problem...
I will try to find a used PIII motherboard just like mine
to install.
Now tell me something, i just need to replace the
motherboard?
What i mean is, if i switch the motherboard and restart
de pc it will work fine? It will recognize my hard disks,
the cd, rw, operating systems .. etc... ???

Thanks again for your time...
Helder honestly it's very difficult to say what could be wrong. It's possible that the surge of electricity fried everything inside your computer (CPU, motherboard, memory, HDD's, etc). What I would do right away is bring it to your local computer or one of your computer geek type friends and get them to test each individual piece of hardware to see what could be broken.

Helder if you do find a used P3 motherboard you also need a P3 processor and some SDRAM as well.

Unfortunately I'm not sure what could be broken in your computer wihtout looking at it, sorry.
Thanks again for your reply...

I can do the tests myself, i can test thee HDs, the memory,
and the processor, the motherboard i won't touch ;-)

OK, when i have more doubts i'll come here to
bore you with newbie questions...

Have a great day!
i had a power surge once, killed my hd
Ok, i already run some tests...

I borrowed my brother's PIII 800 MHZ.

I removed his comp memory and repplace it with
mine: it worked fine, it recognized my memory

I did the same for the videocard and 'electrical box': also worked fine

Then, i removed his HD and replace it with mine, my HD
works fine, the computer starts with my OS, everything fine.

NOW, it can only be the board no?
Helder your brothers P3 is using RDRAM?

If you tested everything else and it seems ok, I think it would be safe to assume it's the motherboard.

Sorry, all you can do is RMA it now.
RMA it ??

What's that?
Return Manufacturer Authorization... Basically your MSI 850 Pro 5 mobo should still be under warranty, just send it back to them for a repair/replacement.

I'm not sure how long it will take, but you should get it back in the end.
