I see Shiznit just posted his first fold. Wow, that jumped us 20 or so on the listings. I just checked the log and noticed that it only tries to send the completed work once before getting a new job. Shut 'er down and restarted and it should be posting (bottom of the list, no doubt-LOL) shortly. Won't have to do that anymore (restart) when the cable guys come install my new modem. Guess I'll be leaving the 'puter on while I'm away at work so you two don't leave me too far behind. Oh yeah, and when the new machine is up I'll just create a new username so you won't have to worry about separating results -

You could be working on a big protein, they come in different sizes. It'll say WU progress and give a fraction. Some are XX/100, XX/200, XX/400. 400 is the biggest I've seen so far and I just finished one. It isn't on the scoreboard yet but hopefully if Colin does a small one as his second one, it'll put me ahead of him. lol....I'm not. I still use my computer for gaming like I normally would. Avid6eek
06-15-04, 01:25 PM
I agree with you somewhat that gameplay isn't what it used to be, but at the same time there have been massive improvements in some gameplay areas. Go from Mario Brothers to GTAIII. Big difference in both graphics and gameplay. Actually, I can attribute this to the fact that gameply got a huge boost with the advent of the 3D Map/World.
That's true, but what aobut stories? Before games didnt' have the luxury of having good graphics, they needed an awesome store to capture the players... Don't get me wrong, there are still some pretty awesome games out there but they're few and far beyond.

I dunno about stories. When I play UT2003, I could really care less about a story. I just wanna have fun and see some awsome graphics.
That's true, FPS's usually don't need a great story as long as they have good game play, but I play lots of other games as well...

For instance, I'm a big RPG fan, but FFX was horrible! They don't really let you play the game, rather you follow the story, fight a few monters here and there and see a lot of graphics. For me it was easily the worst RPG I have ever played.

Shiznit's Folding@Home Tweak

Hit the {Ctl}{Alt}{Del} keys and then go under the tab "Processes." Right click on Fah_Core65.exe (A.K.A. Folding@Home) then go down the menu to "set priority" and select "high." This will allow F@H to still run and perform rather well while your surfind the net, and using other non-intensive applications. Please not that if you accidently choose "Realtime" your computer will freeze and you'll have to do a cold reboot. This tweak is 100x better than anything Colin has to offer, so disreguard his comments. If you don't believe me look at the stats page.......AMD all the way!!!

How do you decide how much credit a work unit is worth?

How do you determine how many points a work unit is worth? Before putting out any new work unit, we benchmark it on a dedicated 500MHz Celeron machine (this machine does not have SSE/3DNow). We plug the results of this into the following formula:

points = 2 * multiplier * (daysPerWU)

where daysPerWU is -- no surprise -- the number of days it took to complete the unit.

How do you set the deadlines for the work units?

Each work unit is benchmarked on a dedicated 500 MHz Celeron machine without SSE/3DNow. We look at how many days it takes, and multiply this by 2.5. This corresponds to requiring such a machine to fold less than 10 hours a day in order to meet the deadline. From our experience, the majority of donor machines are faster than our benchmarking machine, and virtually none are slower, so this shouldn't be a problem (if a machine is slower, it may need to fold more hours a day). Occassionally, deadlines may be set longer than the above calculation indicates, but the reason for having deadlines at all is that the sooner we get back work units, the sooner we can put the results to good use. We are looking into, in the very near future, having the assignment server take machine speed into account in making assigments, thereby allowing slower machines to receive smaller work units.
I leave core priority to Low, and make sure the CPU usage thingy is all the way to 100%. Changing F@H's priority to high makes it run over all the other WinXP processes. If you have WinXP and you leave your computer alone, it starts doing it's old thing, rearranging files, and all sorts of stuff. Putting F@H on high priority stops that, because then Windows only does what is absolutely necessary.
