Hello,

I installed WinXP Pro this weekend (Friday actually), then reinstalled all of my various drivers and other software. System worked perfectly until today. Now when I restart or stop completely and the turn the system back on (even after several hours), the boot-up process stalls on the WinXp Pro screen. The blue progress indicator moves across 5-6 times then stops in the middle of the display and then my HDD indicator LED stops flashing. I then have to press the Reset button and then after the reboot, I get a screen from which I can go into SAFE mode or Start Normally (and other choices). Any ideas or suggestions?

I did install Norton System Works 2002 today (along with PC Booster and Diskeeper Lite). I removed the first two and still have the problem.

Thanks!

H.
Hansaman your luck doesn't seem very good!

Press F8 while your system is booting and try to boot with the "Last known good configuration". If the OS still doesn't load, try starting up in safe mode and use MSCONFIG to see what is loading up at startup or look at your services...
As you only installed it on Friday, you might as well format it again... I know it is a bit of a bugger

I just installed a trial version of Norton Antivirus 2003 (as I wanted to check something out). I think my suspicions were confirmed. After the install was completed, I re-booted and it lock-up again! I then got to where I could get to the desktop and remove Norton Antivirus, and rebooted. No lock-up. On the face of this, it would appear that there is some kind of incompatibility between Norton products and WinXP.

I do not want to reformat and install XP again. I had to call MS in order to activate it the last time.

Thanks!

Hmm... That's pretty weird, I'm running Systemworks 2003 myself on XP and last year was running Systemworks 2002 with no problems... Hansaman do you know how to use MSCONFIG? Perhaps NAV 2003 is running something at startup which is conflicting with another program or the OS...

Colin,

I know how to get into MSCONFIG and go to the Start Up Tab, but once there, I do not know what has to stay checked and what I can uncheck. I did uncheck a few things that I am certain I could (ie. my raid controller adminstrator, Billminder, InCD, MS Office, Quicken Start-up, WinZip Quick Pick, AdUserMon, deskup, ImgIcon, msmsg). As for what is left (CTSysCol, CTDVDDet, CTHELPER - Creative associated), updreg, Nero Check, REGSVR32, NvCpl, nwiz, HKCUSoftwreMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersion, ZoneAlarm and two more Creative Labs-associated (RcMan and CTCMSGo).

I currently do not have any Norton or Symantec stuff on my system so there is not NAV2003 listed.

<< I do not know what has to stay checked and what I can uncheck >>

all third party programs (i guess you could call them that) can go like all Messengers, Your CD burning program, Microsoft word (if it comes up in the startup) etc.

OK, I pretty much have everything in MSCONFIG (Start-up) unchecked. However, I think my boot-up problem is related to a piece of hardware, specifically, my joystick. I started checking out my hardware settings in the device manager and found under "Human Interface Devices" the following:

Logitech Virtual HID Device
Logitech Virtual HID Device
Logitech Wingman Force 3D USB
Logitech Wingman Force 3D USB (HID)

It looks like the joystick is installed twice.

I uninstalled it and re-ran the install software that came with the joystick (leaving the USB cable unconnected). I then connected the cable when asked to and continued the installation. However, WinXp detects this connection (and the hardware connected to it) and installs drivers for it.

I then downloaded and installed the latest drivers for the joystick from Logitech's website. I am now running the most current drivers.

Is what I listed about (for devices) supposed to appear like this in WinXP Pro? If not, is there a way to keep WinXP Pro from detecting and installing the device so that it is not installed twice?

Much thanks!

H.
Hansaman when you uncheck all the stuff do you still have booting problems? If not, uncheck everything, your system should still load up.

I have a Logitech Wingman Cordless myself and it's only loaded once with the latest logitech drivers... But if you reinstalled and it's still there I guess that's normal. I assume it's working properly right?

Colin,

One thing I did last night was insert the WinXP disc into my computer thinking that there was a way to do repair installation. Well, the normal installation process started. I let it run through the complete process. I did NOT have to reactivate! I then checked all hardware settings and saw only one copy of my joystick installed. I have not re-installed NSW but so far, the machine boots up just like I would expect it to do (without problem). So the initial indications are that my upgrade over the weekend did not occur completely (for some reason). Cannot explain it, but so far so good. Only time will tell.

Thanks!

H.
