BAM!

hey do any of you know anything about the processor competition later? i am sure those of you who do, Colin and Shiznit.
cause one of the rumor i hear now is that AMD is droping out of the processor competition wth intel. some guy i met told me that AMD gave up on competing with intel and that they can't keep up. so they're droping out as a processor maker/competitor. instead they're going into memory making. i certainly hope it's not true. since their 64 based processor is coming out and now that they got a new partnership from apple who is going to be using AMD's processor from now on. i just wanna ask you and Colin see if the rumor i heard was true.

-bam!

No AMD is not dropping out of the Processor market. That must be some kind of Intel propaganda. It is true that AMD is becoming a major manufacturer of flash memories, but Processors are still their main thing. AMD would never decide to leave because "they can't catch up" AMD was ahead for only a brief period, but the rest of there existance has been behind Intel. As for the Apple/AMD releationship, a lot of that may be rumored too. Apple was designing lots of 64bit software and many thought it was to run on AMD cpus but it turns out that the MAC will be running a 64bit processor by the end of this year at close to 2.0Ghz. It's supposed to run applications twice as fast as current Macs so they may once again be getting into competing performance levels with the PC. Another interesting thing to note is that those PowerMac Processors are built by IBM, and now AMD and IBM just formed an agreement to help eachother with processor advancements.

Like what Shiznit said, no AMD is not dropping out of the CPU competition, but they are no longer going to compete as aggressively on the price front with Intel. No more $200 top of the line processors, rather AMD is going to try a price parity (for the top of the line models) with Intel parts.

Whatever they do, they have to do it fast... AMD can't bleed red ink forever and it would be bad for consumers if they went under!

If AMD goes under, I will buy up the fasest Athlon I can and run it for the next 3 years! After the 3 years are up it'd probably still be worth a few hundred dollars to other loyal AMD fans

Maybe more! Remember how much those Voodoo5 6000's were going for on eBay? Haha, I would do something like that.

Very true, good point.

That is very likely Intel propaganda garbage or some urban-type legend. I just read (in PC World or Computer Shopper - one of them for sure) that AMD just signed up with Cray (remember them) to produce some big-time "super computer" using a series of AMD CPU powered PCs. I doubt they would do that if they were about to get out of the market! I will verify the article and post the details.

AMD all the way!
Granted I will Use Whatever still but secrectly under the covers in the mad passion I'll Still cry Out

AMD I LOVE YA

I think I still Have that chip

Let me correct myself. Macs current cpus are made by motorola. The CPUs they will be using later this year will be made by IBM.

let me clear myself too.. before when i said that apple is signing up a contract with AMD for using their cpu for future apple machine. i read about that from my phone. i get tech news, world news, and us news delivered to my phone everyday. that was one of the tech news i got. although it wasn't a full story news.. just a brief message so i don't really know the detail. "maybe" they are signing up a deal or "maybe" they're not or even "maybe" they are just considering possibilities. but thing is it was a simple message saying "apple will be using AMD's upcoming processor" so i can't prove it to you what the real story is.

-bam!
