if you harddrive is clunking this can be one of three things (well maybe more but these are the most likely)

1. your hdd is bad (you have already seen this is not it)

2. you have a bad ide ribbon

3. your ide channel is going bad.

the solutions for these?

1. replace the hdd

2. buy new ide ribbon to test this theory

3. try running the drive on the other ide channel or try running it on a pci controller card.

hope this helps you out here. there are more things that could be going wrong but with the little info you have provided theres not much i can help with except the more obvious thing that could be going wrong with the system.

CaffeinatedSoap I had a similar problem with my test rig's 40 GB Maxtor D740X right from the beginning and it ended up being a bad HDD.

Another thing it may be is bad power... If your PSU is under intense load, it may not be good enough.

ok heres the result of the tests i have done:
Swapped ide ribbion-still clunkin
swapped ide port-still clunkin
swapped powersupply-still clunkin
put hd in friends comp-no clunk :-D
I am gonna run the hd diagnostic thingy from maxtor and see what that shows.

If you hear any loud clunking noise, try a different PSU, if it still persists then it's time to RMA the sucker. Even if it passes the diagnostic program it's still not good to hear anything other than the normal clicking of the drive reading/writing data which should be very quiet for a new drive. I'd suggest you call the 800 number of the manufacturer or the shop you got the drive from.

Do you hear anything if you plug in another HDD in to your system?

If you didn't mention the clunking, I'd suggest you test the RAM for errors.
