View Full Version : C: andD: now called F: and G:
I had a RAID setup that didn't work b/c I think I had wrong RAID driver installed. Anyway, I removed the 2 hard drives from the RAID controller (they were on IDE3 and IDE4) and placed just one of the hard drives back on the primary IDE1 (e.g., DISK 0) as the master with a DVD as slave. Upon booting the system back up I would have expected the hard drive in IDE1 (it has 2 partitions called SystemXP and Data) to be identified by WinXP Pro as C: and D:. However, WinXXP identifies them as "System XP (F)" and "Data (G)". Doess anyone know how to get WinXP to iidentify and name them C: and D: as they should be? Thanks in Advance.
Hey Jake! That's a simple fix dont' worry!

First, make sure you have administrative access. After, go to your computer management and then go to Disk management.. From there just right click on the drive which you want to change and go to change drive letter.
just to clear colins comment up a bit if for some reason you dont know where the admistrative tool on your system are located.

start --> settings --> control panel --> administrative tools --> computer management --> storage --> disk management

that and i just felt like posting here lol ... bored again

Okay, I was able to change the Data (G) drive back to D:, however, the system won't allow me to change the System (F) drive back to C: - "Windows cannot modify the drive letter of your system volume or boot volume". Guess I'll have to attach and boot up with another XP drive and then change the System (G) drive back to C:, assuming the "new" boot drive isn't already called C:. Yes, I have admin. rights as user. What a mess, I had a good drive all setup the way I needed it, and then I went to create a RAID 1 mirror and somehow got the cables (drives) mixed up on IDE3 vs. IDE4 and proceeded to create a mirror copy of the wrong damn drive. I am so pissed off that I did such a dumb thing - haste makes waste. I don't have time like some of you lucky guys to play around tweaking this stuff. Anyway, I needed to vent at myself some more - pls note your help is greatly appreciated!
