Honestly I XP hasn't failed me yet... A bit picky on the hardware at first, but now I have no problems!

My only qualms with it is, some of my older games do not run properly...

Adv Server was pretty cool when I had it.
I had no reason to run a Server platform though, so I switched back to 2000.

XP is pretty neat.. but I still feel like it's the 'average consumers' OS. I hate knowing that there are all those fancy visual effects available even though it's possible to get rid of em.

I'm torn between the latest and the possibly the greatest. I'm a version freak. I love to have the newest version of software.

fav home os would have to be XP Pro 2600 and the (incomparable) OSX for Mac
as for servers, i hate microsoft servers...useless piece of code. linux or unix is the only way to go, especially with redhat adv server and the bluecurve gui. I'm thinking about switching my home pcs over to that, but then you have to have lots of emulators for games and neat progs...so

All that spying stuff in XP gives me the willies though.

I really wish I had the gall to install Linux and run it. I manage to install Redhat 6.1 once, but I couldn't get anything to work on it, so I kind've just stared at the screen.

Best Home OS - WinXP Pro
Best Server OS depends. If you want to hurry up, set it up, and move on, Win 2k. Unfortunately your going to have to d/l a new patch every 3 days. If you want to take the extra time and do it right, and have no problems, Linux 8.

linux server is easy and fast to setup lol.

it really all depends on the kind of server you are wanting.

I didn't say it was hard. There are just many more things you have to do manually than what Windows does automatically.

Indeed. Which is the most user friendly Linux distribution out there?

P.S. Is MacOS really based on Unix?

Joe

mac os is based on unix. but is very proprietary(sp?) lol ...

from what i have seen as the most user friendly linix would be Lycoris linux.

If you could run Mac OS X on a PC, It'd be my primary OS.

i was thinking about trying that lol. would take a ton of tweaking and possibly lots of driver writing .. but i am sure it can be done. would be a good project

I'm sure there as to be a group of people out there who have tried this. This is one of the main reasons I was hoping that Apple would adopt the AMD Clawhammer CPU. Just so I could use the Mac OS. I don't see why Apple doesn't make a PC version. It could possibly be a whole new market place for them and I know a lot of people who really hate Windows. It would actually work for them.

If they did do this, Apple users would once and for all see how much faster their software runs on a PC

Not a chance. If you kept up on apple news you'd know that Apple Desktops aren't selling because even Apple users know they are falling behind the PC in performance. The Power Mac is not expected to come into competition again with the PC until the IBM CPUs are used later this year around 1.8Ghz. Sure Apple has a very few programs that run fast on the Mac (Photoshop being like the only one now), but in general they are slower systems. It really pisses me off how everytime you get in an argument with a Power PC user about speed, they always bring up Photoshop. You can't base an argument on one piece of software. It's like those Intel users who say their CPU is faster than AMD's because they run benchmarks faster. Every knows that in the real world it's no contest...AMD all the way

I always thought mandrake to be the most user friendly in the native enviroment, and the dual system version is easy for the windows people who can't use a command prompt. Plus mandrake has the absolute best hardware support, too bad i have only 9.0 beta.
Win XP has a lot of Linux/Unix features, but that isn't surprising seeing who was on the design team. Longhorn is going a very OSX type of route, just with M$ xtras and spyware added on.
OSX on a PC would be an interesting one, it even has a smp kernel. As for macs being slower...some of the ones over at my architects are impressive, they just need to switch to ddr. dual 1.25 ghz with i meg cache a piece, 2gbs pc133 sdram, 9700PRO, dual 23" cinematic displays. not too bad...except that they cost $16,000.

As for compatibility with XP and games, I've never had any problems with that...i even still play commander keen, the FIRST one. Just use the compaibility mode...Heretic and Doom work great aswell.
