I originally wrote this in another thread (Can't delete it) but I think no one saw it, so I'll try this shiny new thread.

<< Dudes! I have the same problem except it's a blank folder. Inside there is a folder named 'TaGGeD 1' or something like that, inside that are 'com1' and 'com2' folder. All are empty. When I try to delete I get 'Cannot delete file: Cannot read from source file or disk.' The problem is, how do you delete a blank folder in DOS? It shows up as a DIR but the name is just blank. I also tried Safe Mode and still no luck. I have a feeling that it's a virus or something because the folders inside keep replicating... >>

Help.

That was an old post. Since then I've checked my whole sys for a virus with the latest and tastiest virus definitions and still nothing.
Also, since then, no new folders have been added. I checked the props and nothing out of the ordinary is there, everything is Zero K.
This is the full path of it all: D:Archive . TaGGeD . . . .com1 . . . . S c A n n E d . . . ~ for .. . . .
Running XPPROSP1.

If you solve this problem, you get a shiny new penny.

roy that folder is most likely a old system file folder ... those folders can often not be able to be deleted.

sorry i dont remember off hand how to delete files in the prompt lol. ... i am having a big brain fart today

It's definitely not.
First of all, it's on my D: drive, which is my secondary drive. It's never ever had an OS on it.
Secondly, it's never been there before. So something fishy is up.
Lastly, I know how to delete a directory in DOS, it's just that the main DIR is just blank. So deltree ?
DOS won't recognize the command because it doesn't see the blank space as a name for a folder.
Ya see?

roy I think you may have been hacked... One of our servers was hacked by a script kiddie and he created those folders on a bare drive. The problem is, the folders are named after system devices and Windows gets confused and will not allow you to delete them.

Have you tried booting into a DOS prompt (not a DOS window within Windows) and try deltree?

Yes Colin I have. But the main problem is.. the main folder doesn't have a name!!

It's just a space for a name. So, if I go into DOS and go into the root DIR where that folder is and type 'dir' I get the listing of all the files and folders. Now, that folder shows up, but in the column where the folder name is supposed to be it's blank. This is natural because the folder just has a space for a name. So how does one delete a folder with just a (space) for a name using the deltree command. Normally it would be like:

deltree [folder name]

But in this case.. there is nothing to put for [folder name] so the deltree command cannot work. You get what I'm saying? This is frustrating.

And P-Joe, I checked for any data and there is nothing there. Grrrr.

roy, the folder still has an ASCII character!

If you're in a DOS prompt and type ALT + 255 you will get a blank character.

Try this...

Deltree (then ALT + 255)... Deltree may pick it up!
