<br><br><< <i><BR>Pimpin Joe: I tried flipping the Pwr LED around and still get nothin. (shouldnt the power LED still come on even if the video card isn't compatible?)</i> >><br><br><BR><BR>no you could have something installed wrong on the motherboard .... like your ide cable could be flipped the wrong way. usb not plugged in right. things like this can cause a motherboard to not operate at all. <BR><BR>has your computer booted at all? ... if not then resetting the bios isnt going to do any good ...the board is already at its default settings .. (unless you bought it used from someone)

Ok, so I just finished putting together my first computer. I have a Pentium 4 2.0 ghz cpu. For now I have an old 2 GB hard drive with Win98 installed on it. My cd-rom and floppy drive are in and I just put in 256 mb of SDRAM. I aslo just put in an old video card from a gateway 2000 and tried hooking it up to its old monitor. when I power up, I hear the fans turn on and two lights light up on the mobo, but nothing comes up on the monitor, and I can't turn it off by the "power" button. <BR><BR>I have no idea why this isn't working, let me know if you have any ideas.<BR><BR>Thanks in advance.

check to make sure all your cables in you tower are pushed in all the way. maybe the video card is dead, try using a different one

video card is working fine, just tried it on another computer. checked all the cables also. one other thing is that the power led is not coming on. but the hard drive led is on.

maybe have to do something with the psu

06-15-04, 02:25 PM
this is probably the stupidest answer you'll hear, but maybe a cord is damaged/broken/doesnt work etc

kazzy1313

power supply is working properly. Just wonering... does the video card automatically install what you "plug" it in, and how about the monitor?

Polykranopalous
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
well when I changed my video card cause i was using a intergrated one, I shut the computer down, plugged the card in the agp slot and I kept the monitor plugged into the intergrated card and booted the computer up, got into BIOS and changed primary to agp and than went to windows and installed drivers, than shut down and switched monitor to agp card

I kinda had the same problem, except when I booted up, my monitor actually worked, but the thing would freeze everytime at the log on screen. I was using a HD that had windows 98 on it, and from what I hear, win98 is pretty brutal at transferring mobos.

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
what OS did you finally have on you HD when you got it to work?

06-15-04, 02:25 PM
im guessing that this is another computer ur building and not the one your using rite now. u could always try another harddrive or maybe reformat the one ur using

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
ok maybe i'll try that. Also, another cable came with my motheroard and i dont know what it goes to (it didnt come with a manual), and there is a section on my motherboard that says "G-led" and "G-sw", have any idea what they go to?

Polykranopalous
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
what mobo you got?

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
it's a "DFI WB72-SC motherboard"<BR><BR>Do i have to install it somehow it came with a CD, but u got to remember I am a newbie

Polykranopalous
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
well I am not completely sure how to do it, but I'll search around and try to find out for you... than ill know how to do it

Polykranopalous
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
are you sure ur mobo is DFI WB72-SC motherboard? I am looking in DFI.com's product list and cannot find it because usually the sites manufactorer has a online manual, its strange I can find the mobo in review sites, just not the companies site, are that ashamed of it?

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
I'm sure that's the name of it. I opened up the cd that came with it and there was a manual in there. i looked at it, it's one of those AcrobatReater doc's. Didnt tell much though.

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM

wait... I just thought of something, compsnake had something like this, it could be that the AGP is died, try using a PCI video card if you have one

Joe
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
for the power light try flipping the power led cable around onthe motherboard pins... thats probaly the problem .... .as for the no video ... i doubt that video card will work in your system being its from a old gateway 2000 computer. is that thing even a pci card? lol .. if i remember right they where mostly isa video cards. and that wont work with your system .... get yourself a pci or agp card. it should fire right up for ya <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> ..... and a larger harddrive and more ram is highly recommended <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> but those can wait <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> <BR><BR>*edit*<BR><BR>i recommend going with the agp card and not pci ... you will be much happier with agp.

kazzy1313 is your computer making a series of beeps? If so, can you tell us what it sounds like, your computer may be trying to relay a message to you.

1. Make sure the power supply is P4 compatible(ATX 12V).<BR>2. Make sure the video card is either PCI or AGP 4X(1.5V).<BR>3. Double check the installation of the board.<BR>4. Double check the RAM.<BR>5. Double check the CPU.<BR>6. Make sure the BIOS supports your 2GHz Northwood.

06-15-04, 02:25 PM
Well, everything you guys have said checks out except for the video card. I dont have a spare right now, I'll try using one from my main computer for now. What is the difference between PCI and APG ? (which is recommended)<BR><BR>Colin: no sounds/beeps either.<BR><BR>Pimpin Joe: I tried flipping the Pwr LED around and still get nothin. (shouldnt the power LED still come on even if the video card isn't compatible?)

RESET YOUR CMOS. i have the same problem last week

DeanLowe
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
The AGP slot is the brown slot on the middle on your board. The video card <font color=white style="background-color: 3E3E3E;">MUST</font ft> be APG 4X or 8X running 1.5V or PCI.<BR>AGP is a lot faster then PCI.

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
Alright, i'll double check my cables. Which one is the idle cable? (color cables, etc).

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
Comp Snake : You said <i>RESET YOUR CMOS. i have the same problem last week</i>, What is my "CMOS" and how do i reset it?

Colin
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
kazzy1313 what I would do if I were you is, uninstall everything and remove the mobo from the case. Place you rmotherboard on top of that anti static bag that came with your motherboard and install just your CPU, memory and videocard. now see if it powers up properly.<BR><BR>If it does, then there's something shorting out your board in your case, if it doesn't perhaps one of your parts is dead. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0"><BR><BR>As for resetting the CMOS, there should be a jumper next to the CMOS battery. Short the 2nd and 3rd pins for about 5 seconds and then put the jumper back to the default location. Tha'ts all you have to do to reset the CMOS. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Sorry if this picture is a little big, I tried to resize.<BR><BR>Well you guys take a look and see if anything is wrong (besides the fact that there is no video card in there).<BR><BR>ALSO: I just found that cable that's in the upper right of the picture. It came with the motherboard but I don't know what it goes to.<BR><BR>there we go.

Ok, I hope this picture works. Tell me what ya think and maybe what that "lone cable" in the upper right is for. <BR><BR>Thanks guys.<BR><BR><img src="http://members.lycos.co.uk/csmo/Forum/kazzy1313/P1010240.jpg">

well i would tell ya, but after seeing that "Intel" sticker on the fan, it made me soo sad, I cant bare to tell you the truth of what that lonely cable is for

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
Well if it wasn't there Colin would get mad. What if i just cover it up, <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0"> - then could you tell me what the cable is for?

06-15-04, 02:25 PM
kazzy...umm...new agp graphics card definitely...then your done...the one from your gateway 2000 will never work...so dont even bother...(i just happen to have a gateway 2000 in the house)...so just get your self a new graphics card before you try any of the otherthings (reset cmos) the ohter peepz suggested...because a gateway 2000 is basically an antique and there is no chance that its graphics card will work on your computer...but do get one that allows you to refund incase my gut feeling is wrong..lol

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
Thanks, that'll be the next thing I'll do. Dont worry though guys I'll have another problem in a couple of days that I can bug you with.

wuts your budget for one tho?? if its low then a ati radeon 7500 wont be a bad pick...i think it sells for less than 90 canadian for sure...but with a p4 2.0 mhz then a ati radeon 9000 or 9100 or 8500 wont be a bad choice either..the cheapest i've seen for these are about 120-150...i got my 9000 with 128 meg ram for 140 canadian i think...but that was a couple months back...so it should be less...

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM

I was just joking - I got no clue what that wire is for... If you were me you probably would have ripped the cable out by now - but DONT DO THIS cause that cable is for something...

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM

06-15-04, 02:25 PM
kazzy1313 sorry, went away after I sent you the link yesterday...<BR><BR>Anyway I'm just wondering... What did you use to as spacers between the backplate and mobo?

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
Colin: I used what look like Brass bolts

DeanLowe
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
And where did you put those 'brass bolts'?<BR>How many points are making contact between your case and motherboard?

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM

kazzy1313
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
I screwd those bolt things into the plate of the motherboard in 10 spots. The board's holes lined up perfectly with them so I put it on top and screwed in the screws that came with it through the holes in the mobo into those brass bolts. <BR><BR>I'm lookin at the package that came with the case and it comes with that same cotents except it has 10 extra "o-ring" type washers that are a paperish like material, are those supposed to go between the mobo and the bolts?

DeanLowe
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
Don't worry about, as long as you only put the stand-offs where the holes on the motherboard are you're ok.
