I'm also looking to add Linux Redhat 8 on my comp. Any advice on the best way to run the Dual boot would be helpful.
just load the 98 cd up and instal it on a seperate drive .. you will then be dual booting. when you boot your system it will give you the option of what os you want to use.

same thing with linux ... (well a little different .. but either way its pretty much the same)

you can install on the same drive as the other os .. but that can get a bit messy sometimes ... so it would be a good idea to install on another partition or drive.

i wanted to do that do...i know how to work 98 with xp (did that for a while..but i gave up on 98 eventually..lol) but i have another question...

i partioned my current harddrive...and i whant xp and redhat...i popped a redhat cd in it..chose to boot from cd...n it seemed like it wanted to format my xp partition (it didnt let me choose waht drive either that or i never got to that part)..so i got scared that i was gonna lose everything so i cancelled..LOL..my question is that will it actually format my partition?? cause im not sure it can exactly see that i have partioned my drives..sigh

im gonna try it when i transferr my 8 gigs worth of data to my sisters hd...then i'll see if i can get linux on there...but that will have to wait till midmarch..when i get my march break away from school...well..if homework doesnt kill me first..lol

the other question is how long will it take to transfer 8 gigs via my network and to transfer from hd to hd?? and of course..which will be faster??

Transfer data over 10/100......assuming your home network is running the "100" do the math. 100/8 = 12.5MB/Sec. 8,000/12.5 = Theoretical amount of time. You'd probably be better off if you must plug her HD into an IDE channel of yours and copy/paste your HD over

aww crap..and i thought i could be lazy and skip the opening case and pluggin in hd part..sigh
d/l a boot manager...and create a partition, well actually create 3 partitions for dual OS. you need one for XP Pro, One for your files and one for win98.

Linux is the same way Shiznit, it installes on FAT32 but can read from NTFS only.

o crap...linux only reads from ntfs??..hmmm....now i hafta reconsider...sigh...either give up ntfs or i can only read from it..arrgh
all i heard was that i have to upgrade it from 98se to xp. to do the dual booting.

i got the information from this site: http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/94/
to dual boot with linux you will have to know how to use the partitioning program in there. depending on what version of redhat you are using it will vary on how to instal ... like red hat 5 you had to instal it at like the 8gig mark on your harddrive or something like that lol. it was weird. been a while since i have done it.

dual booting windows with linux can be the easiest thing to do or the hardest thing to do .. it just depends on the version and distro of linux you are using.

I tried partitioning up my secondary HD to dual boot WinXP and Win98SE. Actually I was making 3 partitions on my secondary. So I'd still have one for files/porn, and one for Linux. From my other thread you can assume that this attempt has failed horribly. Now I can't even access my Maxtor Sell it on ebay!
