Ace, more ram will improve your overall XP experiance. that 256 is barely enough to run the os smoothly. actually only way to get it run smooth witht hat little of ram is with a ton of tweaks. that and if you have a lot of software thats running all the time .. thats gona suck up pretty much all your ram and you will then have to use your harddrive as virtual memory .... this is where most people start having issues with a OS.

so upgrading your ram would probaly solve a lot of your problems. I would go to atleast 512megs of ram.

you say 512 of ram. ok. do you not think that the cpu needs upgrading too? as i say i can only upgrade it to athlon xp 2100 (about 1.73GHz i think)

ace you can probaly just overclock that 1600+ to 2100+ speeds lol. ... but no the 1600+ is still a pretty fast cpu ... you will notice a larger performance increase with the ram then you would with a faster cpu.

I am running XP Pro on an Athlon 1800XP system with 512MB PC2700 RAM and it runs fine for me! I did have problems when I first installed it, it took for ever to boot up. I posted to this forum asking questions and got a lot of great tips. The first thing you should do (and it will definitely help speed up your boot time) is go into "msconfig" to the "Start Up" tab and uncheck anything you do not absolutely have to have running in the background (or starting up during the boot process). I did that, and it fixed my problem. Also, as most of the other posts here said, tweak, tweak, tweak. There are a lot of tweaks you can do to XP to make it run better (same goes for 98SE or ME).

Good luck.
