Hello,

(Posting this under the OS thread as I think my problem is OS related)

I need help from anyone that has WinXP Pro and Norton Systemworks 2003 (or 2002) loaded on their system and working without any problems.

I cannot get either version of NSW to work on my XP machine. With 2002, the antivirus auto-protect will not enable and I cannot clear anything out of the Recycle Bin (Norton Protected). The options to empty this are grayed out. With NSW 2003 (I have the professional version), I have the same problem with the recycle bin plus Norton Ghost will not install. I do not really care if Ghost is installed but because it will not install, an error message comes up during boot-up.

NSW 2002 works perfectly on my Win98SE machine and on my WinME laptop. Therefore, I think it is a problem in XP that is causing my problems. I do not have any other virus software installed. I have minimal programs starting up during the boot-up process (did this through msconfig). Currently, neither version of NSW is installed on my XP machine and the Registry has been edited of all Symantec entries.

Anyone have any ideas?

My system specs:

Abit KX7-333R mobo
Athlon 1800XP
512MB PC2700 DDR
2 x 80GB 7200RPM 8MB Cache WD hard drives (RAID 0 Striping)
Audigy Platinum 2
GeForce Ti-200 AGP
Lite On 52x24x52x CD-RW
Toshiba 16x DVD-ROM
WinXP (full install with SP1 and all current updates)
(All device drivers are most recent available)

Thanks!

H.
to be honest with you, its most likely the norton crap software. you should always run it from the cd and not install it on the system ... that software is the biggest resource hog you can find and i am willing to bet it causes mst OS related problems. so i say uninstall it and just run the utilities from the disk when needed
What would you recommend for a software firewall and antivirus then?

I run both and have no problems. I actually find it to be very reliable.

I don't run a firewall, but for my anti-virus I use McAfee and it has always worked great. updates itself when new viruses come out and really has worked flawlessly. I used to use no anti-virus software, but after I cought the Nimda worm for the 15th time, i decided it was time to get one.

<< What would you recommend for a software firewall and antivirus then?

I run both and have no problems. I'm not so enthusiastic about routers. Everyone I know that has them has trouble with them. My software firewall seems to be very secure so far. I know hardware firewalls are better but I don't feel like paying for them and having to go through an extra set of configurations. When I get a second computer running I'll probably look into routers.

Shiznit, are you on dialup? If you not.. how could run a setup without a firewall? I feel naked without it.. hehe. Everyday I get like 20+ blocked attempts.

Appreciate the information. I will just use the disk and not install (for now). I really do not want to buy another product as I have just bought NSW. As far as running the antivirus software from the disk how do you get the latest virus definitions? Or do you not?

Thanks!

H.
pointless running the Av from the disk as it is outdated so you will only get an AV check on the known ones that are on the disk remember AV is updated all the time were as the disk the Av is not updated unless you install of the disk then update.

i would use AVG free Av it is excelent and also sygate free for fireweall both are good and reliable.

i also have Norton systom works 2003 pro and it installs great and works great sorry i can not help you on how to fix it, if you did a clean install of your OS then installed it would probably be fine, although NAV is a sys hog
shez you can update the software then burn it to a new disk.

also the only reason why one should have troubles with a router is a: they dont know how to use it. or b: they bought some off brand because it was cheap.
NSW 2002 & 2003 are great software when you need it but at other times, it's a pain in the neck esp with Cleansweep. Keeps popping out whenever you load a new program from a CD. I uninstall the whole damned thing & runs the utilities from the CD. I only install the antivirus - use custom install & update regularly. Not only it creates problems in WinXP but also in WinME & Win2K Pro. esp when you run Disk Doctor.

I got it to install (after a lot of work). I found a download at the Symantec site that goes in and cleans out all vestiges of previous installations. I then cleaned the disk as much as possible. Although it is a legal copy of the software, it was obtained from a discount place in CA and it had a bunch of stuff on the surface. Everything works fine now (except that I had to make the Norton Protected Recycle Bin a regular recycle bin). I found a free AV on the net that seems to work well. I will check things out for a week or so and may just take NSW off altogether and run the utilities from the CD.

Thanks!

H.

When I bought my HP it came with McAffee, but I had problems with that from the get-go. I bought NSW after one month and have been upgrading my NSW annually since. Never had a problem with it , even after installing WinXP Pro. I will admit it does use a hell of a lot of resources, but haven't had any trouble with that. Just disable NSW and/or NFW when you want to game (don't forget to disconnect from the net before doing this).
As for removing stuff from a Norton Protected recycle bin, just highlight it (shift+cntrl+end if you want to get rid of all of it), right click and select delete. You won't see it again. NSW added junk to the recycle bin to combat the problems associated with the Nimda virus executing from there. It is a PitB, but I believe it's better than having to deal with Nimda, etc.
Also, running AV directly from the disc is only good after you have been infected and cannot be updated with new virus definitions, so it's at your own risk if you choose to do that. Panda Active scanner would probably be the better choice.

oh, yeah. My first copy was from a discount software vendor as well.

rithemking,

Appreciate the information. Unfortunately, it did not work. The Delete option (while Right Clicking) is grayed out and will not function.

Right Clicking gets me the following:

Recover
Recover to ...
Delete (Grayed out)
Properties

All options to delete are grayed out for some reason. I can set my recycle bin to standard it it works fine (of course the stuff that is in the protected bin remains).

Thanks!

H.

Sorry I couldn't help you with this. I haven't ever had this problem with my XP Pro. I looked at everything I could (options) and couldn't duplicate your problem. So when you right click the desktop icon it doesn't display the option to Empty Norton Protected Files or Empty Recycle Bin? Have you tried Symantec's knowledge database?
