the A7N8x does have big problems with memory compatibility and stability. so in this case it's either bad ram (in that case you should RMA the samsung) or in compatibility/stability problem. try the samsung on another computer see if it'll fun fine. if it runs rine on another computer means it's just a compatibility problem. my previous samsung memory ran ok on this board, altho it wouldn't allow me to increase the FSB at all!!..

also lately i've been struggling with another bios bug on this board. apparently a lot of people out there on the net has the same "cold Boot" problem. many have problem cold booting up the computer with certain FSB frequency even tho it would run rock solid stable at all time it still won't post at the cold boot. you have to hold down the power botton to shut it down and turn it back on again to get it to boot. my system can run solid at 171FSB but i have to set it down to 166 to make it cold bootable. i sincerely hope asus can come out with a new update for bios soon to address this problem. eventhough they're always slow on the updates.

about your question about the different colors of ram slots, they are basically two different channels for the ram. so if you want to enable the dual channel feature you have to put one of them in the back slot 1 and the other in slot 3 blue. or slot 1,2 and 3.

by the way.... your icon looks creepy as hell!!

Let have a stab at it too. Im sure as joe said it IS a ram compatibility issue and i think since you have the ram boards in slots 1&3 I beleive that is set for dual DDR mode and they have to be the same sticks . Correct me if im wrong here .

ok i dont have the plroblem but two of my freinds do.

They both bought the A7N8X dlx and a 2400+ but the motherboard labels it as a 1800+, i know you can raise the FSB and the multipliers, but im afraid of blowing the processor(cause its not mine). I did raise them, well just the FSB to 133 and it read it at 2400+ but at the bottom it said CPU over speed or something like that, in white with exlamation pionts, so changed them back. So what do i do Do raise them and igonore that warning or just leave it.

and for my second problem both of my freinds bought Samsung pc3200 512mb ram sticks. and the system always restarts fashing a blue screen saying to remove any new hardware added or something like that. so i dont know what to do. please help.

thanx

You have the boards Main FSB set to 100, and your overclocking it to 133. That's why it says it's over speed. You need to set the boards Main FSB to 133. This is usually done w/ a jumper, but you may be able to do it in the BIOS now. My nForce2 board is still done by Jumper for the main FSB.

by default the A7N8X dx should set the FSB to 100 the first time you boot it up and put in a new cpu. you need to go into the bios and change the external frequency from 100 to 133. and leave the system performance at either optimal or aggressive. and leave the internal frequency (cpu multiple) as auto for now. boot it up see how it goes.

So that's now it's done on the Asus....wasn't sure, NEVER USED ONE!!! lol

whats the difference between optimal and aggresive

BAM!
06-15-04, 02:25 PM
optimal sets the memory to the most stable timing. as for aggressive it sets the memory's timing to the fastest it can handle. so if you're having some stability issues you should set it to optimal to avoid less problems.

is there any other words or message to that ?...... make sure you/they have both of the memory sticks plugged into slot 1 and 3. if still doesn't work try taking out each one of the hardware one by one and see which one it is that's causing problem. like putting on a different video card, HD, soundcard, memory, .... etc. it's most likely that you have some sort of hardware component that is not compatible with the mobo. also make sure you have all the USB devices unplugged too.

im pretty sure its the ram sticks cause i tried installing windows Xp on of the systems with the just the mushkin 256mb stick on slot one(CLOSEST TO THE HEATSINK) and the the samsung 512mb on the third slot and it would copy all the files to install but then that blue screen will flash. The bule screen would say to remove any new hardware components added like vid card and stuff like that. It also said to turn off any disk defrag or anti virus prog. off, but the system had nothing in the harddrive so i just swithched the vid card and the same problem occurred. I took out the 256b mushkin and put the 512 samsung in slot one, and it still got the bluse screen after it copied the files. so then i just put in the 256 mushkin and i tried the install and everything ran fine i got to install the OS. I swithed back to the new vid card and everything was fine. So it must be the ram stick.

and i just wanted to ask on the Asus board why are two ram slots blue and seperated and one black one next to one of the blue ones?

thanx

Unfortunately all nForce2's are very picky on the quality of the memory they use...

ElrichMeister It sounds like your friend are running their memory too aggressively, try turning down the timings.

IOU you're right to use DC DDR, you need to populate either DIMM slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 3. If all three dimm slots or only one DIMM slot is being used you're in Single channel mode (which doesn't make a big difference).

Usually it doesn't take Colin so long to fly to Tawain to pick up his pre-released hardware.....only this time he had to make a stop in Columbia to pick up some dehydrated thermal paste (that's what he told me). If you ask me it just looks like a brick of white powder

im pretty sure its a compatibility issue because we ran the sick in two asus boards and we had two sticks of of samsung and thay all had the same problem.

in order to access the dual channel ddr the sticks have to be the same brand or same size? or do they have to be both, brand and size?

thank

<< by the way.... your icon looks creepy as hell!! >>

i got it from uglypeople.com and made a little effects on the back with photoshop (he looks like something from thumb wars)

i strongly recommand the same brand. most of the time if it's a different brand it'll still run, but there are times when they just haev trouble running together. and you can run two sticks of different size, although i am not so sure about using them for dual channel. my answer for now would be YES you can. but you might wanna confirm that one with colin.

ElrichMeister nForce2 is very picky on the quality of the memory you're using. Do you know who manufactured the entire DIMM modules (not just the DRAM)? It sounds like it's generic PCB using Samsung DRAM.

Usually it's best to run two of the same brand memory for compatibility purposes but it's not necessary... As long as you have quality memory you should be ok.

To run DC DDR though you need to use the same sized modules! You cannot use different sized memory otherwise you'll go back to Single channel mode.
