So I gave my girlfriend a copy of Windows XP full to install in her system after formatting and when she ran the installer it got to the first reboot stage and it came up with an error saying that one of the cabs should have more information in it and then it died. The whole system is now locked out. Any ideas?

She has sucessfully installed it before so I am quite baffled. I haven't actually tried tooling with it myself because I haven't seen the problem, only heard her descriptions.

Considering the ammount of data on her HDD, reformatting is not an ideal solution.

I've got the specific errors here:

(FATAL ERROR) Setup Failed to install the product catalogue
The setup log files should contain more information (PRESS OK)
One of the compenents that windows needs to continue setup could not be installed.
E:I386
t5.cat Error Code 70 - Signature invalid] (E: is the CDROM as far as I know)

It sounds like the CD-ROM drive is not reading the WinXP disk correctly. Either disk needs cleaning (may have smudges) or the drive itself is failing. I just replaced the drive in my kids computer because it started not reading disks spradically, then stopped altogether.

Also, from you said originally, her HDD was reformated (prior to trying to install XP). It should not have any data on it. What brand HDD? If it is a WD, then you can Write Zeros to the drive using the install diskette. Writing Zeros (only need to do so to first 300-500 cylinders) will effectively make the drive like new.

Also, (from my own WinXP install experience), I tried a "simple" upgrade install from Win98SE but that did not work, so Zeroed the HDD and did a fresh install. During the process, I was asked to insert an OS disk (from a previous version) so that the XP installer could verifiy I was entitled to install the new OS and found whatever code it needed to do the job.

You may be having some similar problem but it sounds like the CD-ROM drive is failing.

H.
CD-ROm failure sounds right. I received errors like that all the time when I installed from my PineTech DVD rom drive so all I did was sell the piece of crap and get a liteon and not once as it failed me, but getting back to your issue it does sound like the CD-rom drive is having the problem.

Her computer was formatted a while ago and winme was installed, so it's not the hard drive. I'll look into the cdrom drive though.
