well im not sure either, but i give u some basic info... You could setup a server on your computer, but than your PC and internet has to be on for the sites to be viewed. I would suggest if there just personnal sites going for free hosts like Tripod, Angelfire and Geocities, or if you really want you could buy a Paid plan from a paid host and some will give you like 5 subdomains which than you could setup each of them to have a limited amount of space etc.

you gotta have some pretty good web server knowledge to use apache .... but check out the help documents .. they seem to be fairly good on how to do it ... i am sure you can find guides on the net as well.

Apache/Redhat is used by most and is very good... Im sure if your still looking for more you could pick one up for a few hundred dollars
Apache is much more stable and secure than Internet Information Services (IIS). IIS is an optional component that you can install if you have Windows 2000 or XP. You simply go to Add/Remove Software. Then hit the Add/Remove Windows Components . Looks for Internet Information Services and you can install a web server, FTP server, or SMTP server. Once you have that installed, you configure everything through Computer Management. If you decide to go with this built in program, I suggest you use Windows Update to get all the security patches and have a powerful firewall installed.

However, both programs will require you to do some reading or at least some trial and error work so I suggest you go with Apache. I understand it's difficult, I had trouble running it too, but in the long run it will be worth it.
I would highly suggest you just buy a domain and some space online .. i like ipowerweb.com ... with your limited upload speed that will be murder on websites and any sites you place your hosted files on. ... so pretty much you would be killing other peoples speed. which isnt exactly cool in my opinion.

also keep in mind some ISP have limits on the amount of bandwith you can use in a certian period of time. this is actually most ISP's if you dont have a buisness class account. and once you push the ISP so far they can kill your service very easily lol.
Eh, he said he will be hosting for his friends and stuff. Buying space shouldn't be necessary. It's a hassle to buy a domain name and space, and wasted money if you're just going to post pictures and text.

As for the ISP limit, unless you're going to host very large files, you shouldn't worry. Also, if your ISP caps your bandwidth per month I would suggest finding a better ISP. That's just wrong to do that...

Yeah, im using sambar, its quite good, also my isp is blueyonder and im on broadband, whats my bandwith with them?

and would it be better upgrading to broadband 1mb?
your upload speed is what matters ... if you only upload at 15k thats what people will be downloading your images from the sites from at. not to forget that this will take from your internet speed. if to many people hog the bandwith .. or even the server just running could considerably slow regular browseing down.

also roy, ISP's dont limit the amount you can download its the a time the amount is downloaded in. if for say you are running a internet audio stream that tends to really piss a ISP off lol. unless you have a buisness class account like i do. webservers may or may not PO the ISP. it all depends on the provider. i have never heard of that provider kamatari so i really couldnt tell you what they are like with this issue. but most of the times ISP's go get a little mad at things like this and will either drop your connection speed to around 56k speed or kill your internet for a few hours.

you really are better off just getting a host. ipowerweb.com is cheap, fast, reliable, and great tech support for about 100bux a year. you get 400megs space, 30gigs transfer a month, 300 email accounts (you wont have your own email with your server)
For 110 dollars a year at www.arteryplanet.com you get 1600MB of space, 32GB of bandwidth a month, unlimited subdomains, 4 addon domains, domain redirection, unlimited POP/IMAP/SMTP email accounts, email responders, 2 types of webmail, unlimited mailing lists, spam filters, unlimited forwarded email addresses, unlimited FTP accounts, PHP, PERL , 50 MySQL databases, SSL support, a whole array of different scripts and programs that are automatically coded for you, 7 types of statistics and hitcounts. It runs on Redhat Linux and Apache. 99.99% Uptime Guarantee, and 30 day money back guarantee. You can go lower in price for a little less service. They are very honest and have great speed and stability. I always get my max of 250K when I download from them, and if there is a downtime by some freak chance, they tell you why and what they will do to fix it.

This is why it's a hassle to find a place to host. There are so many companies, and about half of them are garbage. So good luck.

If you go with IIS, don't forget to check for patches on a regular basis. There are a lot of trojans that like to exploit known holes in that software.

Is IIS free and where do i get it or get info on it?
It's free. It comes with Windows 2000 and XP. It's on the CD, you just need to install it because it's not by default.
