Guys (esp Colin), do you know if there's a way to have the console version of F@H running w/o having an icon in the System Tray? If so, I might be able to sneak it onto my dad's comp.

Hi Venom.

You need to use a program such as Quick Hide Windows or Windows Hide Master.
I've tried Quick Hide Windows and it works great, problem is, under Windows XP, it will hide stuff but never unhide it.
I have also wondered how exactly does the console and the core work, it seems when I kill the console process, the core is still running so perhaps you don't need the console for it to do the work but you should consult with the folding guys on that I guess.

Karateka

The console version is a non-graphical version of the folding app. It uses a DOS window to show you progress and run. I generally use it because it has less chance of interfering with other apps.

Karateka

@ Venom
the best way is to run it as a service. you can run the console as a service with win NT/XP/or 2K with FireDaemon but with win 98 and winme you would have to use regedit and use the gui. eithier way your dad would have to be pretty computer illiterate not to enentually notice the program is running. one sneaky thing you might consider is renaming fah something like scan so that if someone went into task manager or pressed ctrl+alt+del it would show something that looks important instead of folding@home but you can't rename the cores because the client won't reconize them and will redownload them again.

Really the best way to keep your butt from being kick is not to install anything on your dads computer without his OK. I know I would be more than mildly upset if I found out someone installed some software on my computer without my knowledge.

Well, Ill ask him. But, even if he knows about him, it would still be nice if it didn't get in his way. He does use Win98.

<< with win 98 and winme you would have to use regedit and use the gui. >>

How would I do that?
Also, with the gui, you can't see it with ctrl-alt-del when it's on the taskbar.

go to run in the start menu and type regedit and then go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRunServices and add a new string with the path of the gui. A few thing you should do first is delete the shortcut in startup folder if you don't you will get a message there is already a copy running , secondly you need to configure the client now just reboot. now to check if fah is running you can just press ctrl+alt+del and look for fahCore_65, fahCore_78, or fahCore_ca it might take a minute or two before the core shows up depending on if it has to get work or not so if it doesn't show up you can eithier wait and try again or go to the folding@home folder and look in the fahlog to see whats going on.
