View Full Version : fan mod question
alright, i have a nice aluminum case from skyhawk, but it only has a 60mm(thats very limited) fan exhaust by the cpu, and an 80mm exhaust(on the side), and an 80mm intake(thats very limited). i'm thinking about putting the clear fan on the side, into a drive bay, and adding a huge fan on the side that would blow out, and i was wondering how much difference that would really make and if its worth it. i have a xoxide x450(but its not a xoxide, same thing though.)

i've already cut a hole in the top because it flips the powersupplies upside down, and i have a dual fan psu. i'm also going to make a fitting on the case so that way i can put my 92mm smart fan(old, but it works) up against my videocard that pulls heat frmo it, and from the motherboard(its significantly helped when i just put it up there.)

amd xp +2000
asus a7n8x-deluxe
512mb PC2700
geforce4 ti4200-8x
usually there is a reason case manufacture make their case airflow the way it is. if you're deciding on changin the whole airflow direction you need to look into it VERY HARD. changing the airflow often times can rapidly increase your case temperature. do more tests and see which type of air flows better. usualy try to keep the air going "one" direction. don't separate them in the middle of the flow or redirect them, that way it'll kill your whole airflow path. also some HSFs is designed to have air sucking out of the sink and some are blowing into the sink, you need to take that into consideration too. more fans don't mean better cooling, keep that in mind! sometimes it's better to have less fans but efficient airflow path.
The only thing I can add that BAM! hasn't mentioned is that aluminium cases can be easily damaged by cutting into them.
Also adding two side fans will most certainly chnage your air flow, see Howard BAM!'s comment for results of this
with the cutting into the aluminum, it works fine so far, because we actually attached the psu to the aluminum with screws when we put the fan grill on top of it.

my experiments have gone best when i put my smart fan 2 in the side blowing out(around 105-105 cpu/mobo temps) when i usually get around 120/100. my video card FELT significantly cooler also. experiment #2 was putting our large house fan and blowing it inside the case, i got 100/90 cpu/mobo temps. the best so far has been the house fan, thats why i was thinking of putting a big fan like it in the side. i wouldn't have to do any cutting on the aluminum, because theres already a hole there to put it in, i just have to take off the acrylic window.
by the way, my case DOESN'T have that good of airflow. all the fans i have added have been helping the temps.
putting a house fan on your case always works!!!! .. if you don' t mind the noise and beauti (if you can call that).
heheh thats the thing, its a lot less noisy than my smartfan2 which is the high pitched whine. but now heres the question..would it be better exhaust do you think, or blowing air in?
no, the huge fan i'd put on the side, in or out. i have 2 smartfan2s, the heatsink and one on the side that i had to work on there..
it depends on if your heatsink is designed to suck air out or blow air in. but if you're talking about using the house fan without a case cover..... then it really doesn't matter what airflow you make... just point that baby directly into your computer you'll be fine. but if you're thinking putting a side panel fan.. you need to take consideration on your heatsink thermal design.
yeah, it'll probably be a house-fan type of fan that i will stick in there. i'll just have to experiment whether i like it in or out. thanks for the help.
