View Full Version : overclocking XP 2700+ TB help...
I just bought a asus mobo a7n8x and a ath XP 2700 + TB and a volcano 11 heatsink and fan. Im very interested in overclocking but when i go past 170 mhz fsb my computer wont boot up. When i try to increase the multiplier it will boot up but it crashes every game i go into. Im not sure what to do. Any help or suggestions will be greatly appriciated. Do i have to up the voltage to my cpu? if so what would be considered a safe up? i dont wanna burn out my processor. i have a 333 processor 166x2.
sounds like a voltage insufficiency. just upp the vcore a bit. your cpu can handle well up to 1.85 vcore so it doesn't matter. plus volcano 11 isn't such a bad heatsink so you'll be fine. oh and.. what kind of memory do you have?... if by any chance upping the vcore doesn't help, upp the memory voltage a bit too.
WELL I ORIGINALLY HAD DDR 2100, BUT I JUST UPPED TO 512 GIEL DDR 3200 400 MHZ MEMORY. i ALSO HAVE ANOTHER STICK OF 256 DDR 3200 COMMING TOO. NOW IS IT SAFE TO OVERCLOCK MEMORY? AND IF SO WHAT SPEED CAN AND SHOULD I OVERCLOCK TOO? WHAT VOLTAGE CAN MEMORY HANDLE<BR>
the voltage thing was the issue now i have my computer overclocked to 2.36 ghz up from the 2.16. I increased my 3dmark2001 score by almost 1000 points. Now when im in a game my computer is running at 67 degrees celcius when it used to run at under 60 before the overclock. is this bad, what is the max allowable tempurature or better yet what should i not go past? <BR><BR><BR><BR><BR><BR><BR><BR>link to 3dmark2001 score <BR>http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k1=6430304

Congratulations on the increased score Xenozx, and welcome to PCStats! 67C is well within the recommended temperatures for AMD. 85C is the maximum recommended operating temperature for AMD. Just remember, increased temperatures will decrease the life span of any electronic component. While 67C is not too hot, it may prove worthwhile to find better cooling (water/pelts) in the long run.

Running that hot would probably scare the sh!t out of me....I don't care what they say the "maximum" temp is ...I would be clocking it back down as soon as it hit 65'C...lol...but that is just me...<BR><BR><BR>Welcome to PCStats Xenozx!!!!!<BR>are you folding yet? If not check out the PCStats folding at home forum and join in....It is for a good cause and we enjoy the competition....<BR><BR>BTW rithemking...I am still trying to catch you...so you could stop folding for a couple of days...<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

A safe place to be is below 50c.
this computer is definately weird. my old computer idled at about 35 c (athlon xp 1800+) and when i played a game it went to 70 degrees c. This comp idles at 53 degrees and only goes up when in a gmae to a max of 68 c. *thats overclocked of course. when it was not overclocked it idled at 50 c and at full throttle 60 c. why such a difference in the temp variations? i have a volcano 11 heatsink and fan and have 1 case fan going in and 1 case fan going out. what would be some other mods that could bring my temp down without having to use water? is it worth going any higher?

What sort of case are you using for that system? My Chieftech has 3 (2 front and 1 side panel) fans for intake and 4 (2 rear and 2 PSU) for exhaust. You could always take the side panel off and blow a box fan on it when gaming or overclocking. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">
what kind of thermal solution are you using for your die?... it's not one of those shiitty thermal pad is it?.... make sure you use some decent thermal compound or arctic silver 3 the best. also making sure that the heatsink is sitting correctly so it is making a good contact with the die.
im using silver thermal paste that came with my volcano 11 heatsink. as far as the case goes there are ton of places to put fans but ive only installed the 2. one on the back shooting air out and one on the side shooting air in.

My suggestion...should be safe to say Colin's(the "CoolerMaster") too....ADD FANS....when in doubt....put a fan on it...

I think Colin would also say "What kind of PSU are you using. You need to at least double that."<BR><BR>HAHA
