Hey guys. Just wondering what I should buy. Looks like I can get a 309 for $62. or a 312 for $60. I guess I'll just have to buy another amd setup.. can't pass up this type of oc amounts. I'll buy Epox 8RDA+ twin 256 Corsair 2700LL, and which JIUHB?

What type of cooling would be best. I'm on severe budget here. Air cooling.. any ideas?

-Will
Well generally speaking the later date(312) processors overclock better, however I am not real sure with these. For the cooling solution, being on a severe budget will not do well for overclocking. But I would suggest the SLK-800 and smartfan II.

Below is what I have purchase.. I went for the Vantec AeroFlow, hope that will be good.

----just purchased from GameVE and Newegg----
XP1700 JIUHB 312 (hopefully overclock it faster then my current palomino xp2100)
Vantec AeroFlow fan
Epox 8rda+
2x 512mb's Corsair XMS 2700LL

----What I currently have----
xp2100 (palomino, crappy stepping)
KR7A-RAID
2x 512mb's Corsair
CoolerMaster.. noisy as hell fan.. don't know what kind.

GeForce 4 Ti 4600
3x 40gb Maxtor Drives
Sony 48x CD-RW
WinXP Pro
Antec SOHO fileserver case (black)
Antec 300watt psu.

Will I need to upgrade 300watt psu to overclock at all?

-Will
It'll run way faster than your 2100+ Palomino. The AeroFlow is fine, a bit loud for me.

And the 300watt psu? Will I need to upgrade that.. or does it only affect performance when I have to up vcore?

thanks for the answers!
-Will

You should be fine with an Antec 300W. I'm using a 350W and have lots more(7 in total - 4 in racks with 2 fans) drives than you. If it's not good enough, it'll affect stability not performance.

Okay, cool.

Thanks for the reassurance. If I see it become weirdly unstable.. I'll try upgrading psu. thanks

-Will.

I would have to say those are some good selections...and yeah your JIUHB 1700 should blow the palo2100 outtta the water. From the reviews that I have read the aeroflow should do the job nicely...I have had excellent luck with my abit NF7-S but I do know that the epox is an awesome overclocker.

Hehe,

Yeah, I'm getting into overclocking pretty heavily now.. I really like learning about hardware and pushing it to see just how much it can take (... last statment = generic) lol.. but you know what I mean. It's addicting.. Hopefully I can make a stable computer at around xp1700 @ 2.2ghz. would that be to much to ask for a stable gaming comp/3d modeling and animation compie?

=Willbur.

BAM!

most of the JIUHB i know should all reach at least 2.2 - 2.3 ghz.

does the 2.2ghz make the chip faster then a xp2700 or 2800? I know the clock is higher.. but do the newer have larger cache? If so.. how much of a performance increase is there when the cache is doubled in the newer ones?

-Will.

EDIT - I bought a 312.

I know the 2500,2800 and 3000 are barton cores and thus have twice the cache but the 2400,2600 and 2700 are all t-breds and have the same amount of cache as the 1700 (somebody plz correct me if i am wrong)

Yep, i've checked into it since. a larger cache would be nice.

will
