Heya.. just wondering, I need to download all these programs you guys use to test stability and whatnot.. can you point me in the direction of any of them. Big one that I want to use is Prim95... where do I dload that?

I just got JIUHB 312 + Epox 8rda pc2700 twinx Corsair 512's. I want to push it but I need stability. Any help would be cool. I just hope that Newegg sent me good ram and it isn't DOA. I'm at work or else I'd already be putting it together.

-Will

Here you go. Whoohooo! WTG Will!! I can't wait to hear how far you can push her. What HSF are you going to have running on that rig anyway?
3DMark2001SE/2003 & PCMark2002 can be found here, but they don't seem to stress the CPU as harshly as Prime95 did. I could run the full gamut of Futuremark.coms tests at some clocks, but Prime95 still failed, so I didn't count those as a stable OC.

I am will be using the Vantec AeroFlow (not the slk800) because I couldn't quite figure it all out (which fan to buy etc...)People tell me that the aeroflow will be good enough. Which multiplyer do you think I should use.. with what fsb? I see a lot of people using 10.5X (blank).. what fsb is best for epox 8rda and xp1700 JIHUB? I wanna win the race.. but I don't think It'll be possible, as this will be my first forrey into the OC'ing realm.

That's cool Bam, hehe.. if I didn't have to buy a car, I'd have $1,980 to spend on computer parts that would be so freakin' awesome...With that cash I could put toghether my dream computer and then some... but oh well. I'll have to wait until I sell my first business (I haven't gone to business school yet).

-Will.

<< .. if I didn't have to buy a car, I'd have $1,980 to spend on computer parts >>

Yeah, I hear ya. My 1985 300ZX just crapped out on me Saturday afternoon and the shop wanted to "start with a new timing belt." You know what that means? Already in the hole $100 for the diagnosis and tow. $600 for the timing belt and no end in sight (I know for a fact that there is an electrical short somewhere...). Forget it. I didn't want to have to make payments again, but I have no choice now (was saving for a cash payment 'til now).
You really don't need that much for a dream system, unless you want a Prometiea for the OC.
As for the "best" FSB, how fast do you want your apps to open, or are you more interested in just getting the highest FSB, regardless of the final speed? I found mine liked a 12x by 200FSB stable. Anything higher with a lower multiplier just seemed to cause major instability (and that is with PC3500 RAM). Hope you have a lot of time on your hands for rebooting and tweaking the BIOS settings! Have a blast Will! I know I did. Start out slow, like 2.07GHz and move up from there.
BTW, I just finished putting a Zalman HS on my 9700Pro. Time to learn how to OC a vid card now. Arg, just have to figure out how to properly reflash the BIOS so I can get her (NF7-S) up and running again (All the components except the CPU have tested fine in my Barton system).

Man, I really want to get a 9700 pro! I have no cash but am in dire need of speed for the upcoming games!! again.. money.. crap. I asked if there is going to ever be a pcstats giveaway (hey might get lucky).. but no reply. So.. I guess it's all about my ti 4600 for now. It runs battlefield fine... but HL2 and DoomIII are going to stutter with anything more then yuck performance tweaks..

If you in some way come across a cheapily priced 9700, look no further then my email address yoda@snowcrest.net

heh..I have pc2700LL corsair XMS... so it probably won't go stable over 166... dang.. I wonder if that epox will let me go 13X... how fast do you think that ram will go?

I'll keep you posted as all my stuff just got to my house.. man I want to get home from work right now!!! heh

-Will.

Nice job you have there BAM! Right now I'm only working on the side as a hobby. Trying to get into the help desk at Principal Residential Mortgage. Competition is pretty fierce I guess. Have to figure out how to get the awesome letter of reference Colin wrote me in front of them without totally turning them off. I am beginning to think I must need a degree carved in gold or something to get their attention. LOL. I am a self-starter who has picked all this up since January. Just need a good mentor in the field I guess, but I don't know where to look in this dreary town in the middle of IA. BTW BAM! Thanks for all your help up to this point. I have to say, I am really glad I stumbled on to this community.

How late are you working Will? What part of the world are you in?
BTW, you may want to remove your email address from the thread. You may see a flood of SPAM otherwise(trust me, there is a lot of software that surfs forums just to collect email addresses). Your best bet is to give it to Colin for future reference. He is really good about passing that information along to other members who need it.
You bet I'll send you a note if I run across one. Problem is, I don't know any other hardware enthusiasts here in Des Moines yet. You can bet everyone I know is aware that I am. LOL.
I'm willing to bet you can go far beyond 166 with that Corsair. Maybe not 200, but you won't know until you try.

Heh.. thanks for the tip rithemaking. I'll remove asap.. try an copy it before I take away.. then again.. it's prolly already gone hehe

Thanks tho..man pcstats.com is tight. I've been here for like 2 weeks and I can't stop posting an whatnot.. I'm like a pcstats-a-holic... lol.. it's crack for hardware enthusiasts... especially because I don't know anyone that has as much knowledge about it as I do, thus.. can't really talk to anyone in person (which sux)...

-Will

Vince!... my corsair pc2700 c2 could go up to 189 fsb stable. however that means your timing will slow down by a portion. it's about how much timing slow down are you willing to give up for the extra fsb. but i have no doubt that you can definitely go beyond 185fsb with those corsair.

rithem thanks for the warm praise!! i am definitely glad that i and fellow other forum mates could help you out. it certainly feels great to overclock your first system. so did you ever find out what caused the break down of your system>??

I got it. Check your mailbox already! LOL.
Yeah, there are a few of us pcstats junkies who just can't stop posting. LOL! I love this place.
Yeah BAM!, from the sound of it Ginsu had the same symptoms with his NF7-S and all he had to do was hotflash his BIOS. I've been spending too much time tweaking the case and VC, working for extra cash, and now my car breaks down... Maybe I'll have more time this 3-day weekend to check the CPU just to be sure and then mess with the BIOS chip again. For some reason my Barton seems to like this GEIL RAM better than the Corsair I had in it before. hm.

Rithemking,

Sorry to hear about your car, man!!! It sucks when your car dies on you. I got into an accident two months ago and my car's still in the shop (arrrggghhh!!!)!!! My insurance company paid for a rental car for 30 days, but now I've been reduced to bumming a car off my parents for the duration. Hopefully, I get to pick up my car tomorrow! I hope you can get your ride situation dealt with quickly.

I did want to add here that I recently upgraded the BIOS from Abit from 1.7 to 1.8 and they made some changes that I think will help in not frying the BIOS. In version 1.7, when I made a change to the FSB and saved to CMOS, the "Do not power down while BIOS being saved" screen would come on. Whenever I fried my BIOS, it would hang at this moment and wouldn't restart. Under version 1.8, when I make changes and save to CMOS, it restarts *first* and then the "Do not power down..." screen comes on. So far, I haven't fried my BIOS even though I've been tweaking with settings. I do believe that the danger point comes when I push the FSB over 190 MHz. But with the new BIOS version, maybe I won't have to worry about that anymore. Maybe some of you can tell me if what I think is true. In any case, upgrading to 1.8 seems to have been a good choice for me.

Hey.. I got a real quick question. On my new JIUHB I have gotten it completly stable at 2.15ghz at 12.5X172 I have xp1700 JIUHB, epox 8rda+, corsair 2700LL xms 512's.. I have timings set at 6-3-3-2 and vcore at 1.8v Is there any way that I can get higher speeness?

-Willhelm.

Try upping the voltage for your ram. With your 8RDA+ you should be able to up it to 2.9v. If you do that you might be able to get a few more MHz. Also if your northbridge gets too hot, put some thermal paste on it instead of the crappy thermal pad that epox puts on there. That really helped mine. Good luck!

--------------------------
1700+ at 2.2GHz (12.5x176)
Epox 8RDA
coolmaster X-Dream
512mb ram
Geforce 3 Ti200
WD 20gb 7200rpm

Awesome, thanks.. .yeah, for some reason I feel that 2.2ghz is possible.. maybe more. I'll try everything, thanks...
NOTE: If I change my cas latency to 2.5... will that allow higher fsb and core speed?

-Will.

TranceJunkieXL

lower latencies will probably allow for higher FSB settings, but at the cost of overall performance. Still, it is probably your RAM that will be the limiting factor on this OC.

06-15-04, 02:26 PM
If it's an Epox 8rda+ mobo, shouldn't you be able to push up the FSB to more than 172 MHz? I've heard that mobo is a great overclocker and I've seen people take it to like 190-200 MHz. How about lowering your multiplier and really going for it?

the thing is ginsu, he has PC2700 rams... so he can only go so high with those.

VincentMalloy
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
Well.. I've updated. I got it to 2.28ghz at 190fsb.. I thought it was stable because it passed 3dmark03's cpu test but if I play Battlefield's Mod Desert Combat If I play my own game vs. AI DC crashes to desktop with no explanation. right now I"m at 6-3-3-2 with ram that is rated for 5-2-2-2... the Corsair pc2700LL's I'm pretty happy with it. I'll probably try oc'ing even higher tonight..

-Will.

BAM!
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
nice overclock vince!!... i think 2.28 is very good . tho i think if you smell any instability like crash to desktop you should stop or upp the voltage or something. those little instability might seem unirrelavant but when it comes to crashing during the most important moments you'll really hate yourself. i would stronly recommand you test all your overclock with prime95's torture test before you proceed to the next stage of higher overclock. after all an unstable overclock is not a good overclock

VincentMalloy
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
Yeah.. I'm going to install Prime95 when I get home today.. I think I need to up voltage on RAM.

-Will.
