Hey I have a athlon 2100+ xp running stock at 1.7ghz, how much higher do you think this processor can go?

Do we know if it is a Thorobred core or Palomino?

And what's the stepping? Both GNX and I have the AIUHB stepping and it's my understanding that these cpu's are supposed to be the second-best overclockers (only the JIUHB XP 1700+ is better). I've got mine running at 2.2 GHz (11 x 200 MHz FSB). The highest I've gotten is 2.25 GHz but at a lower FSB.

BTW, GNX you used to have yours oc'd to 2.23 GHz, but now your sig says it's at 2.03 GHz. What happened?

I have no clue on how to find out if it's a palmino or thorughbred. Cpu mutiplier is 13 X133. My mobo has the switch where I can move the fsb to 166. Should I try that.? My computer temp right now is somewhere near 30 and cpu usually at 38.

You will need to pull that CPU out from under the HSF to see what stepping it is and what core (palomino or thoroughbred). If you switch the FSB to 166, that PC2100 will probably crash. You'll probably need to get some PC2700 or higher in order to OC that CPU much above what it is currently running. Also, the KT400 chipset is not very OC friendly (trust me - look at my sig - SOYO KT400, I couldn't get my Barton to run stable even on a 167FSB, though I did finally get it to post and boot up Windows). Raising the FSB to 166 will probably just cause it to crash or not post at all at the moment.

rithem!.. have you tried flashing your kt400's bios?.. because the default bios that came with my A7n8X wouldnt' let me overclock either untill i flash the bios. try that

Well, I got it to post finally after oc (Dean's suggestion with the AGP/PCI divider thingamajiggy). It was set at /3, so I raised/lowered it to /5 (max). Still wasn't stable at anything over 166FSB. I have the BIOS that was new in March, but they posted a new one in April, so I may try that. There was also an older "overclocker" BIOS, but it wasn't very specific on what changed with that BIOS. Thanks for the input though. I'll let you know when I have flashed it again. Gotta fix a coworkers 486 first. LOL!

Actually the gigabyte board came with an overclocking utility that has everything u need to overclock. System and cpu temperatures, speeds of everything that I can change. heres a link to the tool:

EasyTune 4

As for finding out if it's palomino or thorughbred, I'm too lazy right now to go into my computer and take off my hsf(that thing is on there damn tight) Anyways, once I get my new memory I'll try experimenting and give you guys the results.

Oh cr@p. Sorry, there is definitely an easier way to do that. Download and install CPUID or CPU-Z. I think those utilities can tell you what your core is.
ROFLMAO! Has anyone ever looked at the pic they posted on the gigabyte site? It shows a 1.2x multiplier and a 100MHz system bus as being 1400.01MHz clock speed. Wouldn't that be a 240MHz clock? LOL!
Hopefully it actually works better than that.

Alright I got it. It says it's a palmino. Clock speed is 1741.47mghz. Bus speed is 133.96mghz. Mutiplier is 13.

palmino better or worse than thoroughbred?

sorry to break the news to you kid!... you're in for a bad shape.

<< palmino better or worse than thoroughbred? >>

The Palamino is the original Athlon XP core. It is built on the .18micron process. The Athlon XP 2100 is the last of the Palamino cores. The reason for this is they ran very hot. Since it is a natively hot processor, don't expect much of an overclock from it.

Palomino 2100+ don't overclock well at all. In fact, it's my understanding that they are multiplier locked (this means that you can't change the multiplier using BIOS). There are ways to unlock it (by making it think it's a 1900+ or 1600+ or something like that), but from what I was reading about it on the nets it is absolutely a pain in the @ss to do so.

Sorry, dude!!!

Alright, well here's another question. I wanna upgrade my processor, I've had this since christmas, should I wait for the Athlon64 and buy a new mobo and processor or should I get something else ?

You can get a good 1700+JIUHB for around $50 now. You can OC that Tbred-B to at least 2.3 on air. Some of us have gotten 2.4 stable. The 64 is gonna cost a whole lot more and require at least PC3200 RAM. Probably save money by getting a 1700+ and PC3200/3500/3700 now and then swap the RAM over to the 64 mobo if you decide to get that later.

i got an amd xp 2100+ too but i cant run the comp now, mem voltage prob :/ my question is how can i know which type is it (palomino or the Tb) by only looking at it? (stepping is AIUHB 0307 WPHW)

GNXtreme
06-15-04, 01:26 PM
AIUHB is a Tbred...

plus...for future referrence the Palomino core is more square and the Tbred core is rectangular.

Ginsu...my temps were a bit hot with the 2.23GHz so I lowered it a bit...now that I have the MCX462+ and Tornado you can bet that it will be back up there, probably even higher.

TranceJunkieXL
06-15-04, 01:26 PM
Yeah GNX? Now you have NO excuse not to have a higher 3DMark2001SE score in your siggy.
