There is a mod chip for the xbox where you can put linux on the xbox, I read up about it in 2600.

I read on a site somewhere, "Yoshi's box" I think, where someone put several different game consoled in a PC case with a computer also installed. In fact, I think there is an earlier thread on the same topic.
Linux running on an Xbox. That's hilarious.

So far every attempt to put Linux on the xBox hasn't quite made it. When they get close, Microsoft has the project destroyed as it is illegal to mod it for Linux. It is possible though. When the xBox 2 comes out and Microsoft stops watching over the xBox so hard, it'll happen.
linux is opensource so MS cant really shut down things like that. thats why EVO X is opensource. MS cant do anything about it.

but linux on a xbox is really useless. cant really do anything with it. but evox is pretty much a os that turns a xbox into a media station that can still play the games.

been thinking about modding my xbox lately

To get the xBox to take Linux it needs to be modded. That is the illegal part. You can not Mod an xbox as it breaks some kind of patents or copyright laws. xBoxes could easily be used as PC's. They are PIII 700's with I think 64MB of RAM with damn near a GeForce 4 inside of them.

I never said it was legal... I mean after all 2600 (a magazine for those who dont know) shows you all kinds of neat mods/hacks and other such things

I really don't think they can limit what you do with their product after you buy it. Unless you are modding it to sell for a profit. That's the only way I can see it breaking copyright laws. Modding it to copy games, or modding your PC to play Xbox games, though, that's illegal.

Microsoft owns the patents to all the technology inside the xBox. It is illegal to change the way it works because you are still using their technology, even though you are modifying it. Infringing on their rights is illegal.
illegal or not ... its still cool to do and the only way Microshaft can tell if you have modded it is if you use xbox live. ... but to get around that. you just add a swithc to turn the mod chip on and off lol.

To design these mods it takes a lot of people working together. The problem is that they do it on websites, or when they get close they open their big mouths. Then Microsoft finds out and can take legal action against them. That's why these websites keep getting shut down. Yet there is always another group of fools that want to publically display what they are doing.

Okay, for all of you that believe that you know whats going on, try talking to somebody that actually mods. It IS NOT illegal in any way, shape, or form to modify an Xbox in certain manners. If you were to change the chipsets or modify the motherboard or psu in any way, legal action could be taken. The thing is that installing a modchip in no way modifies the actual motherboard or psu, it only utilizes the motherboard in a way that was not originally intended.
And about the Linux stuff... Linux is opensource, so using it is not illegal to use it on your pc, right? And an xbox is actually running on a windows 2000 core. This fact alone makes it completely legal to create a linux version for xbox, as long as it in no way relies on that windows 2000 core. The only problem with the linux projects that have been shut down is that they did rely on this very core. There are linux projects for xbox out there that work and don't rely on this core, making them completely legal.
Also, Evox is not an OS. Evolution-X is an OS, and Evox is it's dashboard, or the UI that you use to navigate your way around the OS. Avalaunch and Xbox Media Center (XBMC) are actually OSs, and work very well, aspecially if you use a Xenium modchip, allowing you to boot up to 8 different Dashbpoards and/or OSs.
Thank you for reading, I will now get off of my soapbox, but just realize that xbox modding, in its truest form, is not illegal.

There were pimps in 1970?
Ok, there was a way for an xbox to be modded into a pc... Due to the fact that its really just a 733 mhz computer... Besides using a modchip... I think MS found the website.
