I just recently sold my old AMD 2000+ system and with the money I built myself a new one...
Specs:
AMD 2600+ with 333 fsb
KT4 Ultra
512 mb RAM PC2700 333

1st question... I have a 350 Watt PSU and need to know if I should upgrade?
I'm running 3 x HDD, 2 x CD ROMS, a cold cathode, 10 fans (all up), GeForce Ti4200, and at the moment only 1 PCI card

2nd question... I want to overclock but I'm unsure as to what would be the best settings?
At the moment it's set at 187.5 x 12.5 = 2343.2 & corevolt @ 1.75 ..temp is 35 deg C
And before I had it set at 185 x 12.5 = 2312.5 & corevolt @ 1.72 ..temp was 28 deg C
Why such a large jump in temp (~6 deg C)? should I try go any higher?

And thirdly What's all this talk about time settings? is it to do with RAM? If so what would be the best fer mine?

I'm sure I had many more questions... I just can't think of them at the moment

Thanks heaps for any help

-NaSTy-

If your 350W PSU was made by people who gave a crap about quality(like my Antec) then you don't need to upgrade.

Anything under 40c is great but you'll have to find out if those readings are accurate or not.

The best RAM settings are those with the lowest numbers without crashing your system.

P.S. should've bought a nForce2 board.

Thanks for the reply Dean

<< If your 350W PSU was made by people who gave a crap about quality(like my Antec) then you don't need to upgrade. >>

Ok so I should change my PSU

<< Anything under 40c is great but you'll have to find out if those readings are accurate or not. >>

I have a digital thermometer monitor on the front of my case which only differs by about 2 deg C then the BISO.
I was looking at downloading one of these MBM but am unsure which will work with my mobo.

<< The best RAM settings are those with the lowest numbers without crashing your system. >>

Ok

<< P.S. should've bought a nForce2 board. >>

Yeah I'm really PISS OFF about that.. I needed to get my computer up and running ASAP so I went to this computer store and the guy tells me there all sold out of Epox Mobo's.. and coz I was a little low on cash I had to settle for for the KT4 Ulta Then They tell me they're all sold out of PC 3200 400mhz RAM so I had the guy ring there other store to see if they had any in stock. So he rings the other store and they have em in stock. So I jump in me car and drive halfway to a$$hole of the univers to find out they just sold out Fu*k was I PISSED!! .... I have a 350W PSU from Enermax and I've had no problems running six LED fans, a slot blower, a NB cooler, two CCFL lights, a 5' EL cable, a rheobus, a USB2.0 PCI card, 2 HDD, a DVD & CD-RW, and a Matrix Orbital LCD screen. You don't need to upgrade unless the PSU is giving trouble, and you would know when that happens.

As far as overclocking, first try to determine the upper limit of your chip. Once your know absolutely how high you can go, you go for a slightly lower overclock that will give you the most stability. Overall, you want to raise your FSB as much as possible (this will mean lowering your multiplier at the same time). For example, with my 1700+, the upper limit seems to be 2.28 GHz. It will boot up windows at this speed but it won't pass the Prime95 test. If you don't have this program yet, then definitely get it. Let it run for at least 24 reiterations. If your system is not stable, it will crash out and the program will tell you that there is a possible hardware failure. My system seems most stable around 2.26~2.27 GHz. But I can get that in multiple ways: 12 x 189 GHz FSB or 11.5 x 197 or 11 x 206. The last combo would give the highest overall speed, but my crappy OCSystem ram can't handle above 400 MHz, so I have mine set at 11.5 x 197. This second setting gives better benchmarks than the first, however.

As for ram timings, there are four settings: (1) Cycle Time, (2) RAS# Precharge, (3) RAS#-to-CAS# Delay, and (4) CAS# Latency. In gneral, the higher your FSB, the higher your ram timings will have to be in order to be stable (lower is better). At 206 MHz FSB, I had to set timings to 6-3-3-2 (respectively) to boot up at all. At 197 MHz, I can use 5-3-3-2. At lower FSB settings, I've even gone down to 4-2-2-2. But again there is a trade-off between FSB speed and ram timings. Higher FSB speed is more important for system overclock than ram timings in my experience.

Hope that helps!

Good luck Nasty. I have had absolutely no luck at all overclocking my KT400 SOYO Dragon.
Great explanation Ginsu543. If you want a more detailed explanation Nasty , my best friend just sent me this link.

Well, they say 2 weeks, so I won't be overclocking again for awhile.
I'm hoping my 0308JIUHB OCs as well as the 0310 did.

Is it a DLT3C or a DUT3C? And what was your first chip?

both are DLT3C. Dean's DLT3C definitely OCs better than his DUT3C.

Hey thanks rithemking fer the link..

<< I'll let you guys know how I go

Thanks

-NaSTy-
>>

Ummm yeah.. about that... I kinda been out of action for a while
I was Involved in a car accident... But that aside I did manage 188 x 12.5 = 2350 stable

Cheers for the help!............ (better late than never)

Sorry to hear that Nasty. I know from personal experience what can happen to the human body in an automobile collision. Hopefully it wasn't too bad and you recover quickly. Good luck in your OC endeavors as well.
