For those of you who own Abit NF7-S mobos or others who have mobos with SATA,<BR><BR>Have any of you guys connected a parallel ATA hdd to the SATA port using the Serillel or other PATA-to-SATA adapter? If you have, what were the exact steps to accomplish that? I would like a detailed play-by-play to connect my Western Digital Special Edition ATA100 hdd to the SATA without losing any data. Currently I have the SATA function turned OFF in BIOS and I do not have the SATA drivers installed.<BR><BR>Any help would be (as always) very much appreciated. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">

Are you referring to the SATA RAID function? When I first tried to install my JIUHB, I used the Serillel adaptor but couldn't get it to post past the "verifying DMA(?) pool data". I suspected this was due to the fact that SATA drivers had not yet been installed. Changing from IDE to SATA using the SATA drivers shouldn't cause you to lose any data (unless you are talking about setting up a RAID array?).

No, just switching the IDE to SATA. I'm not sure how to go about installing the driver. If I install the driver while the hdd is connected to the IDE, then attach the Serillel adapter, then connect the whole thing to the SATA header (using the supplied cable) and reboot, will my system recognize my new hdd and boot up?

Enable the controller in the BIOS, install the driver then unplug your drive and install the PATA to SATA adapter. You shouldn't have any problems except for the fact that you just wasted money for the adapter and got no performance gain for it.

Well, my Abit already comes with the Serillel adapter, so no money lost there. The only thing I'm trying to achieve is to give the master hdd its own proprietary channel. Currently it's on the same cable as my internal Zip drive.

I wanted to spread out my drives between channels as well but those adapters are damn expensive if you buy em. Cheapest I saw was like 20 dollars.

Yeah, if you didn't get one with your motherboard they sure aren't worth buying. You are better off buying an SATA drive.

I'll be selling off my drives to get money for a 200gigger anyway. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0">
