I just updated from a 2.4B 533FSB with 512of DDR333 with an Asus P4PE motherboard and my 3dMark 2001 score was 15071 my processor was running at 2.81GHZ. Now I have an Asus P4P800dlx with a 2.8C 800FSB running at 3.1Ghz and 1GB of DDR400 and my score dropped to 14805. What could have happened?

Any advice for upgrading this stuff? BTW my new ram is Samsung stuff.

Thanks,

Cayman

Do you have comparison links for us? There are too many variables for me to even begin...

I'll see if I can find them on futuremark. I didn't change anything else hardware wise, all I did was change the motherboard, Ram and processor.

Thanks,

Cayman

driver versions for the setups are different, even tho same vid card. im guessing the driver 'upgrade' was bull****, go get the prev driver and try it again.

it ya look at your scores, fill rate for multi-texturing and below is higher for newer than old, w/ i think is more dependent on mb, ram, and cpu

Dang Cayman! I don't know what to tell you, the new system should score higher. Have you run both from a clean HDD? Did you buy a Dual channel RAM kit, or did you buy sticks one at a time? They may be a bit incompatible. Try running the new rig with only one stick and see if that gains you the 1000 odd points back.
Also, what timings is the new RAM running, compared to the old?

Cayman
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
I bought the sticks of RAM at one time but they were not a kit. I was looking in the bios and I can't seem to see the timings. I'll look again tonight....It's not from a clean hard drive, I have a ton of games and stuff on it. I've tried in task manager to get rid of most of the "crap" but I'm not great at that stuff. I for sure was expecting higher scores than that....Geez...

Cayman

i think i know what is wrong w/ your computer... when you changed mobos and the rest did you reformat and reinstall windows? Chances are windows is still running on your old settings, reformat your hd and reinstall windows and you will be a happy happy person

also, what are your RAM timings?

Cayman
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
I didn't reformat my drive. I had a lot of stuff on there, I guess I'll just burn it off and reinstall windows.

Thanks

Cayman

I defragged my HDD and I got 15103 It's a bit better but should be way higher. I'll look into the RAM timings and see what I can find in my Bios. I'm not very good with RAM stuff. Is there a prgram that I can use in windows to check them?

Thanks again,

Cayman

Go get a copy of Cpu-Z. The program gives you information about your system, including what processor you're running, FSB speed, and ram timings. It's one of the simplest and elegant programs I've seen (and it's free!!!).

06-15-04, 02:26 PM
well, you are higher than last time, i really think reformatting is gana do it for ya... its well worth the time, good luck

Cayman
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
CPU-Z isn't showing any information on my Memory. All of it is greyed out. It just shows me DIMM 0 and 1 and I can go to each one on a drop menu but no information on them show up. Damn....

Cayman

okay, when your system boots up, and it is POSTing, press del which gets you to the bios... get down to "advanced chipset options" (or sumtin like that) and in there it will have CAS latency, tell us what value is right there

Cayman
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
There must be something wrong with this Bios...I can't find that stuff in there anywhere. I've looked under everything. My last Bios I could see it...this time I can't. Crap. It's a P4P800 deluxe. I'll have to burn my stuff off of the drive and try a new install of windows.

Cayman

Check out the manufacturer's website and see if they have released a BIOS revision for that mobo.

Okay, I changed the ram timings like you suggested 2-2-2-6-8 and now I got 15576 for 3dmark 2001. Is there anything else I can try? Does overclocking your videocard cause damage? I have it at 324core clock, and 310.50 for memory clock. It's an actual ATI 9700PRO OEM version. I'm open to any ideas. I have alot of case fans, and my processor only goes up to about 38C under load and my motherboard temp is about 28C, it's about 26 in the room.

Thanks

Cayman

I don't know how high you can push that card cause every card is different. I'm sure if you OC'ed it, you could easily break 16k or maybe even 17k. Or do you guys think that it can give a bigger points boost?

mmcduff
06-15-04, 02:26 PM
your scores should still be higher than that, id try reformatting. If you dont want to reformat, just get another hd and install windows.

38C means you still have a lot of OCing to do... get it to where it is 50C under full load, and what is your vid card temp? you should be able to OC your vid card to something like 380 core, 370 ram. If you start seeing artifacts (pixels where they dont belong) bring down the RAM clock, if you keep the RAM timings too high it can cause damage, but as long as you cant see artifacts you are good. If your computer crashes, bring down the core clock.

hope this helps...

and HOW CAN YOU LIVE in 26C.... that is D*** HOT

Overclocking the VC will give you the biggest boost because 3DMark is VC limited. I would suggest taking that stock cooler off and putting an aftermarket on it though. I am thinking about getting some RAMsinks, but don't know if they will fit under my Zalman passive. I know the BGA (those nickel plated copper ones) ones won't. I got mine to 393/337(see the sig) with a Zalman and 120mm fan blowing on it.

okay, you owe me one... i went onto the ASUS site and dl the manual... and the problem is what i thought it was... w/ most BIOS when you cannot change an item, it greys out... but not w/ ASUS, it just dissappears. So the good news is you dont have to give yourself a headache w/ updating your BIOS.

To get to the stuff i am about to show you, you need to get to the advanced tab of your BIOS (get there from menu bar... asus has a wierd BIOS), then go to "chipset"

There is an option in your bios called "Configure DRAM timings by SPD" (it is in most BIOS) what this does is detects RAM settings from the memory itself... but thats no fun at all, because it detects slow crap, so set this option to "disabled" and the magically all the timing appear... yay

if you want to lower the CAS latency w/o doing this, in your BIOS there is something called "Memory Acceleration Mode" If you enable this it will lower the CAS, the manual didn't say how much, im guessing 1 or .5

mmcduff,

Thanks. I didn't want to mess to bad with things...I'll change that in a few and let you know what it comes out as. I have been trying to find some good reading on RAM so I can learn more. I'll keep you posted...

Thanks

Cayman

mmcduff & anybody else who can help,

Thanks for the Bios help. I did as you suggest and here is what it showed:

CAS# Latency 2.5 Clocks
RAS# Precharge 4 Clocks
RAS# to CAS# Delay 4 Clocks
Precharge Delay 8 Clocks
Burst Lenght 8 Clocks

I'm using Samsung DDR400 PC3200 2 sticks of 512

Now what should I do? I didn't do the Memory Acceleration Mode yet until you suggest it.

Thanks

Cayman

Damn! There's your problem. Those RAM timings are as slow as you can get Cayman. If all that RAM is decent quality and will run well together, you should try changing the timings from 2.5-4-4-8-8 to 2-2-2-6-8, or even 2-2-2-5-8. 5 may be a bit too aggressive as you purchased all the RAM separately though. (on a side note, I'm still not familiar with the way burst length works, if 8 or 4 is the better setting).

I'll look into doing some extra video card cooling as well as another HDD to install windows on.

mmcduff- I live in Nova Scotia, Canada and it's 26C only a few days a year...we get a serious winter here and my computer is in my basement so it should be running cool then...now that's the time to overclock it....If it wasn't for the humidity I could put it in my shed in the winter when it goes to
-20C..wow I'd be set then!!! I used to live on Grand Cayman....it was hot there. I was a dive instructor so the ladies made it worth while to put up with the heat....

Thanks for the help guys, I really do appreciatte it. Great forum, it's my homepage at work and at home.

Thanks

Cayman

Hey I managed to get a bit higher...16459 bumped up my FSB to 225 and put my ram timings at 2-2-2-5-8 and used the Rage 3d tweaker to the 3dmark 2001 setting. It's getting better. I also stopped alot of the services under my task manager. I'm getting happy with that so far....

thanks

Cayman
