I'm still kind of new at overclocking, but I can't help trying it out. Who doesn't want more speed out of their computer?? I have an AthlonXP 1800+ currently running at 1.74GHz, and the cpu temp is 47 degrees C. Other specs:

Gigabyte GA-7VRXP mobo
512 MB pc2100

The cpu clock is at 150 mhz right now, and if I go any higher than that, the computer gets screwed up. How can I get it up higher and still have a functional computer?
Also, I am using the heatsink and fan that came with the processor, what is a recommended upgrade?

Thanks

get a better heatsink, like the slk800 (im not sure if it fits on that mobo) w/ a smart fan II, if you lower temps you could push it up a little higher... and what stepping is that 1800? and get better ram, some corsiar xms3200 or xms3500, and gigabytes havent been known to OC very well

btw, what's your RAM timings?

I am willing to bet that PC2100 is what is holding you back right now.
As for a recommended upgrade to the HSF, you can't beat the Thermalright SLK800-A or the Swiftech MCX462+ when paired with either a Thermaltake SmartFanII or a Vantec Tornado. what chipset is on that Gigabyte?

Edit: Now that I've had more time to look online I see it has the VIA KT333. From what I hear you should be able to OC that thing a bit beyond the 166 stock settings (provided you have RAM that can handle it). I suggest picking up some PC3200 (PC3500 is way beyond this mobo). Corsair XMS (LL series) or Kingston HyperX.

As for heatsinks I picked up a Vantec AeroFlow not long ago. When I was using the AMD boxed HSF I was running around 50, say 15-18 degrees above the ambient systems temperature. Now, even on the hottest days I run around 40 C, only about 6 degrees above the ambient systems temperature. The AeroFlow is fairly quiet as well, I've heard it's "the quietest of the coolest" and that was my main reason for picking it.

I just bought a Thermaltake Volcano 11+ Xaser Edition, and here is what my BIOS settings are:
DDR voltage 2.5V
VCore Voltage Normal
CPU host clk 150 Mhz
CPU temp 43 C
VCore voltage +1.600V
Vtt +1.248V
+3.300V +3.312V
+5.000V +5.080V
+12.000V +12.608V
5VSB +4.999V

my mobo multiplier is at 12x, if I want to get my host clk up to, say 175Mhz, what would be the best way to make it happen, aside from getting new RAM, as my cash situation isn't the best.

mmcduff, what do you mean by the stepping of the 1800+?

sorry, mmcduff, I'm still really new to overclocking, where do I find the RAM timing?
install and run CPU-Z and look at the memories tab

to adjust u have to go into the BIOS , but this programme shows where u r at now

175MHz FSB may be a stretch for generic PC2100 (that's a 42MHz OC on the RAM), even with increased voltage to the RAM.
RAM timings depend on the specific motherboard and the BIOS it came with. Sorry, I am not familiar with your Gigabyte, so you're going to have to check your manual on that. I'm willing to bet the CAS latency on that generic is 2.5. 2.0 is better, but will probably limit your FSB even more.
"Stepping" refers to the manufacture of your processor. Your Athlon should have a sticker on it with a series of numbers and letters on the second line. (is it a Palomino or Thoroughbred?). My 1700+ reads 0308JIUHBDLT3C. That is the week of manufacture (8th week), and JIUHB is currently the king of overclocking capability. DLT3C I believe refers to the stock voltage setting (1.65v). DUT3C was 1.75v.
Remik is right, if you install CPU-Z it will tell you what core your CPU is. That would give us a better idea of it's capabilities.

ok, now that I have my new setup, where do I get CPU-Z?

rithemking,
Is the slk-800A teamed with a thermaltake 80x20 smartfan II pretty loud?

I want to take a screenshot of my CPU-Z stats and paste them in here, but I can't do it? I press alt+print screen, then try to paste it in the reply box, but can't.

What am I doing wrong?

surfryde, any fan running at 4500+rpms will be a bit loud. The TtSFII does get a bit high pitched at full blast, but you only need to put it up there when you are putting the CPU under a heavy load (gaming or benchmarking). It can always be turned down to more tolerable levels when you are just using the computer for websurfing or playing music. That's kind of why I recommend that one over the Vantec Tornado, unless you plan on buying a rheobus as well.
Sorry I can't help you with the picture bit. If you don't have a site to host your pics, Colin has offered to host them for you. Shoot him an email and ask if he will do this: colin.sun@pcstats.com. tell him I sent you. He's always been incredibly helpful when I've needed it.

and during gaming, just get a good pair of sound-isolating headphones and you wont notice, it works great

you dont need to take a CPU-Z ss, just tell us the stepping

AMD Athlon XP 1800+ Thoroughbred
.13 micron
Family: 6
Model: 8
Stepping: 1

Hopefully this is what you need
I see your sig now shows Kingston PC3200. Are you still having trouble raising the FSB on that system? A Thoroughbred core shouldn't have problems with overclocking.

Now that I splurged and bought basically a whole new setup, I can get the FSB up pretty high, but I'm going to go buy the slk800 with smart fan II so that I can get the most out of the computer.
