hi everyone, i'm having a defficult time deciding either to wait for the pentium 5 or upgrade now to pentium 4. Which one sounds better. I think according to pcstats intel may lunch it next month or month after or so, so it it better to wait for the new motherboard to come and then upgrade or just upgrade to the pentium 4 that is currently in the market. alright, thank you all for reading.

What are your current system stats? Personally, if you made it this far, you should probably wait. You also shouldn't rule out the Athlon 64 which will be released in about 5 weeks. I plan on upgrading to an Athlon 64, but I won't do that until the Prescott P5 is released to to see how well each perform. The P5 would have to be quite a performer, because I have a new P5 and mobo will cost almost twice as much as a new Athlon 64 setup.

Welcome to PCStats theone.
It all depends on what you want. Do you have a small fortune to spend on the newest and greatest system? Or are you just wanting to upgrade the speed of your current system a little? P4 processors will definitely drop in price when the P5s are released anyway.

thanx for the reply right now i have a pentium 3 and a pentium 4 motherboard, the specs for the P4 is 1.7 celeron, 500fbs, 128 mb ram, 32mb of video, 40 gig, 52x cdrom, 4x pipline, the problem is that i am not satified with this one cause it has a 533 fbs, and 4x pipline for video card and also the cpu speed, it only supports to 3.06. so should i wait or just upgrade now to the new motherboard of pentium 4, if i am going to upgrade i'm going to build a whole new system and sell that somewhere. thank you all for reading.

That system still has some life in it. The specs aren't too bad in it. You should probably double the RAM you have to at least 256kb. You'll notice the difference, expecially if your running Windows XP. That ought to give the system a few more months of life, so you can wait for the newer CPU/Motherboards to make it to market.

theone I'm with the other guys here, you've waited so long you might as well wait till the end of the year befor eyou upgrade... It doesn't make much sense to buy something that will be obsolete in less then 3 months.

I'd say wait for the dust to settle between Intel's Prescott and the Athlon64 then buy which ever one is best value.

Come on Colin...we all know the Athlon 64 will be the way to go.....Everyone is going to want the 64bit number crunching power. Buying a new Athlon 64 will be like buying a CPU and a Video card...as all the gaming benchmarks I've seen with this processor are absolutely awsome.

Haha... theone, Shiznit is probably the world's biggest AMD fan so his views are a bit "bias".

While the Athlon64 has a ton of potential, if there's no software to take advantage of it then it's useless. I hope for AMD's sake that the Athlon64 does well and does well fast!

I'd like to see some benchmark reviews.
Honestly, I think AMD has had a genius idea of creating silicon that can run both 64bit and 32bit software. This is a great product for business owner's who may want to try some 64bit software while keeping all or most of their 32bit applications. Makes for a much less painful and expensive switch.

rithemking I'll agree with you that AMD is on the right track however I'm not sure if the rest of the computer industry is ready to move to 64bit computing. That requires all software to be rewritten and I don't know if AMD has the clout to do that even if there are huge performance enhancements.

If Intel were to champion the x86-64 it'd still be very difficult but who knows... I just hope for AMD's sake that I'm wrong and the AThlon64 does well and very quickly.
