hi, what is the usual difference between AMD and Pentium mothers boards, is there something that makes one of them better then the other. or are they completely the same but just the company name, i usually go for the pentium cause that's what i always had, AMD i have no experience with it. anyone have an answer for that? thank you for reading.

AMD is by far the superior processor. They compete with higher end Pentium processors while running at much lower clock speeds. They are also the more affordable of the two. Currently I have an AMD 1700+ JIUHB (1.47GHz stock) running 2.438GHz at a cool 45C load temp. Motherboards, on the other hand, are a whole different ballgame because they have to be manufactured for either a Pentium or AMD CPU (can't swap CPUs like you could back in the 486 days). If you want a decent overclocking chipset, I would suggest something with NForce2 in the specs.
That 1700+ only cost me $60 and it's running as fast as a P4 2.4 (I think at the time they were selling for around $300), and finishes Folding@Home units a heck of a lot faster.

theone don't listen to rithemking he's an AMD fanboy... (you know I love you dude! )

Actually this place is full of AMDers, how did that ever happen since I'm an Intel guy...

Anyway to answer your question, it depends... What do you want to do with your PC? How much do you have to spend? AMD based systems tend to offer better value no matter what you buy and as rithemking said they are faster clock for clock.

If you're strapped for $$$ then get an AMD system as it'll give you more bang for the buck but if you want the fastest thing on the block tha'ts intel baby!

AMD/ATI .... The Alternative system. That's what I'm running and I'm very happy with it. I perfer AMD systems as both the CPU and Motherboards tend to cost less. I'm not really an ATI fan...they just have the best at the moment, so that's what I use, but my next card will probably be nVidia as I do expect them to take the performance lead once again.

There isn't too much difference in image quality at the moment. nVidia's GeForce FX 5900 does produce decent image quality. The Radeon 9800 has slightly better image quality. On the other hand, the Radeon 9800 is fast, but the FX5900 is slightly faster. They both have their advantages....you just have to decide which is more important to you.

I dont really like ati either. I'm actually very dissapointed in this card. I expected much much more. My gf4 mx420 beats it in some things.

How do you not like it? The G4 MX420 can't be a Radeon 9700 in any tests.

LOL. From what I understood that card of yours worked just fine in other Poly's system, so if I were you I wouldn't start bad-mouthing ATI and start looking for what's really causing the incompatibility there. Mine works just fine in my NF7-S.

Right now it does work, im using a different mobo, and What i am trying to say my gf4mx420 pulled higher fps in battlefield anyway. ive had to turn off the shadows, lower the quality, and resolution (800x600, 32bit) and this 9700 still gets choppy with 32 players. with the mx420 i used to play 64 players without it ever begin to get choppy, thats was with all the details on high.

The Radeon 9700 can easily run BF1942 at 1600x1200 at between 80-120FPS. Your still having some sort of problem. If 32 players are causing a game to be choppy, it isn't because of the video card. This is a connection issue.

nope, like that when I play by myself. maby its underclocked or somthing then?

If it is the only game affected, then the game needs a reinstall. Are you using 3rd party add ons for the game? Like I said before, 1600x1200 at over 100fps is no problem for that card. I would play UT2k3 which is still the latest 3D Graphics engine out there at that resolution and keep 100fps.

i have a couple of mods installed, but i dont think that would be it. never bothered anything with the mx420. in 3d mark i scored like 12800 somthing like that.
