Ok guys i had an XP1800 but due to overloading my system with to much hardware the cu fan stopped fora few moments and nuked my cpu i got another yesterday i got a 2400XP and i got a new Enermax 350 Wat PSU seems to have sorted the problem but, now and then i get system freezes and i didnt before which i really dont need as i need it made 100% stable in teh next 3 weeks b4 going to uni.

i took rithemakings advicve and ran Prime 95 and after 1 minutue it errored out saying there is a hardware problem

[Tue Sep 02 11:43:34 2003]
FATAL ERROR: Rounding was 0.5, expected less than 0.4
Hardware failure detected, consult stress.txt file.

now i have no idea what to do the comp was working fine b4 putting the new cpu in apart fro mteh power drain nuked it, my mobo box said supports up to 2100XP but i put in a 2400 and it just said unrecognised cpu type which doesnt bother me if it works, anyways we updated and flashed the bios and in their update the 2400 is there reading perfectly but as i said earlier i have just run prime and it errored out after 1 minute i thik it said and im not sure what to do to be honest as i didnt get these probs b4.

what is the likly problem? anyone ? im open to suggestions because as the only things that have changed is teh PSU and teh cpu im not convinced its software as the system was fine before

chears, chris

From work with Colin, HowardBAM! and I, it looks like it may be the RAM timings have been set too aggressive. Maybe......

Try taking out some of the excess hardware. Maybe you are drawing to much power from the mobo and it creating instability. Having the best damn PSU ever won't help if the mobo can't put out the power. Perhaps pare it down to the bare minimum (mobo, CPU, RAM, VC, HDD, maybe one optical, maybe NIC) and see how things run with the new CPU. If it's all good add things one component at a time.

A while back I found a chart for roughly calculating your power consumption in watts. Mabye find one and figure out what your system uses... you 350w PSU may not cut it. I have all my PCI slots full and 4 IDE devices but I have a 420w PSU. I wish I could remember the URL... but I'm sure a search will turn one up.

humm i'll carry on tinkering, last night had it running for hours with no problem but then just renaming an MP3 file caused a lock up unfortunatly

i think the ram timings are 2.0,3,3,6

yea the 300 wat standard power supply that came with the case bottled out after adding that new fan i think which needs a separate powersupply of a cd drive connector but adding the new supply the wavering in sound and speed of the fan shot up, ive tried taking all pci slots out and that didnt help so after looking at it that way im thinking is not power if there is hardly any drain as before and its larger watt with all the pci's taken out

erm i'll carry on tinkering, maybe it could be a Pc stats competition?? see who can figure out this mystery

Didn't you tell me the RAM is labeled as 2.5CAS? That would probably be why it locks up IMO. Why don't you change CAS back to 2.5 like we discussed IM?

if that ram is labled as 2.5 and running at 2 right now, that WOULD be your problem.

yea i thoguht it was but it says that in PCwizzard but ive checked the bios a few times and its definatly running normal at 2.5cl, ive formated windows but apart from cleaning out my hard drive its not worked
i thoguht it was fine for the hour anda half after installing stuff and programs but when i did a render test it froze
rendering is highly CPU intensive so i think it might bea dodgy cpu Grrr gonna see what tehy say at the shop and RMA it fora replacement or refund maybe if its a replacement and works wehday if not im gonna get another trusty 1800XP like i had b4.

just means im without a comp for afew more days

damm it
