I just ordered an A7N8X... a while back Shiz mentioned in another thread it was possible to drop the board in without reformatting/loading Windows XP. Shiznit, can you give me a breif on how to do that?

Also, please post any overclocking successes or shortcomings you have all had with this board. I am not overly concerned with the overclocking but if I can squeeze some extra MHz outta the CPU than why not eh? And I am sure the nForce2 chipset will OC better than my current VIA KT333.

Last... any RAM recommendations? I have been looking at OCZ because it is available and I have read some good things about it. Specifically I have been eyeballing the 2x512MB PC3200 Dual Channel Kit EL-DDR kit. Any advise in this area will be appreciated.

Thanks gang!
I just bought the board and installed it. You have a similar setup to mine but the problem is: when I loaded to windows, it started to load he drivers at that screen that comes up. And it keep loading, on and on. it was trying to install the memory controler but it couldn't do it. This might be due to the fact that I didnt remove all of my old mobo's components from the system setup window. So I decided to format but before, loaded to DOS to copy my old files from one HD to another ( the DOS command is like this copy C:xxxxxxxxx.exe D:xxxxxx). So basically if you go to cintroll panel, system and click the device manager tab you can remove all hardware components.
Are you buying the deluxe model? Cause with all the extra components it will take you long time to put them in. And another word of advice the onboard sound had problems when I set it up so give me some feed back on what happens to you.

One more, I tried to overclock my 2000+, and it was set at 133x 12.5 to produce the stock speed, and my multiplier cant go any higher so mabye ill set FSB to 166 and lower the multiplier to 12 to get 1992Mhz

Hope I'm helpful!

-This is my 100th post

and a bit more overclocking info, I changed fsb to 166 and miltiplier to 11 and got 1826, but it didnt load to windows. if you try 11.5 youll get 1909.

I wish you luck with the switch on the hard drive...I made a switch from a Soyo dragon KT333 to the Abit NF7-S and I had to reinstall windows...

Ari My 2000+ is at 166x12.5 which gives 2088 MHz on my KT333 board. I am hoping the nForce2 will let me squeeze a few more out of it... but like I said I'm not too concerned. My main reason to switch is for better compatibility with my Audigy and my TV Wonder. I have read that TV Wonder especially has major issues with the VIA chips.

um, ari, if you are using the RAM in your sig to OC the 2000+, that is probably why it won't post or run windows at 166FSB. PC2100 is rated 133FSB at stock, and a 33MHz OC is amazing (though I have heard of it happening).

I found out I can get an A7N8X-X for an amazing price. The difference is that the -x model doen't support dual channel DDR. Anyone have any idea what type of performance hit this would be? Should I just stick with not -X version?

I would Highly reccomend that you formatt when you swtich mobos, I did this and I have been having nothing but problems, but then again thats what happens when you use msi.

Reformatting is a good idea. If your really not up to that, then before you shut down your system for the last time, go into device manager, and remove everything.

If you want alot of features like firewire and dual lan you should get the x model but if you dont then stick with the basic one. As far as I know they both have d.c. ddr

man my A7N8X got my XP2500 to run at merely 2.5ghz (2895mhz). And i was idling at about 96*F. Underload it went up to 123*F. So now it only runs at 2.2ghz. Its a great board, i love it and would recommend anyday
