View Full Version : overclocking my AGP frequency

I have set it to 70Mhz with my ATI Radeon 9800 and it worked fine. I didn't try setting it any higher, so I don't know how high it would have gone.

how adviseable is it to oc my AGP frequency? Right now, it's set at 66MHz like normal, but it can be pushed up to 99.

Depends on the video card you have. From what I've heard from guys around here, ATi card don't like higher AGP frequencies. NVidia cards, on the other hand, do very well with higher AGP frequencies. In fact, I have the AGP frequency on my computer set at 75 MHz (I tried 80 MHz, but that made 3DMark2001SE crash out to the desktop) and my Ti4200 likes it fine. It does improve performance a bit.

I cant get mine to budge.

I'll work on getting it higher when I get my new hardware later this week. My goal is to get my 3DMark score to around 22,000, but that's being optimistic.

nothing wrong with being optimistic! give yourself something to shoot for.
Aim for unachieveable goals like I do.

When I first put my 9700Pro in the Abit after having the Ti4200, the system wouldn't post. I finally figured out that I had set the AGP frequency to 75 or 80. LOL. I put it back to stock 66, and never thought about trying to raise it again until Shiznit did with his 9800. I put it up to 70MHz and it seems to be running just fine at that bandwidth.

Where's your 20,000 3DMark score????

Unadviseable to o/c the AGP and PCI frequency. It will stress the Graphic card, and somewhat shorten the life of your graphic card, unlike overclocking the memory or core. One quick zap over an unstable power supply and crappy motherboard will make your Graphic card useless.

I tried to overclock , had a MSI GeForce FX 5900 Ultra, but there is no difference. Better overclock the memory and core than overclocking the AGP frequency.

skorman00, maybe the transformers (your logo) frequency can be overclock, but that wasn't doing any good on that $500 cards!!!!!!!!!!

I had my AGP frequency up to 100 MHz at one point. It ran great but I dropped to 66 MHz because I was afraid it might kill my video card. It gave an increase of about 400 points in the 3dmark 2001 though.

---------------------
AMD 1700 @2.2GHz
Epox 8rda
512mb pc2100@150MHz
Geforce 3 Ti 200 @225/475
WD 20GB
Antec 1080AMG

You guys have it good. My shiz won't even go 1Mhz above the default PCI frequency(don't have an AGP card) without locking up. I tried and every time I had to reset the BIOS with the jumper

I wouldnt advise overclocking the port. If yours is like mine, switching the settings will also affect the PCI ports. I OCed it once and my modem quite working. So I put it back to the default and it worked again.

It depends on if your mobo has AGP frequency lock which allows you to lock out the AGP from the PCI. My mobo's BIOS allows independent adjustment of the AGP and the PCI. Most of the newer boards have this feature, but like you my previous mobo (Asus CUSL2-C) didn't
