In the next few months Im gonna try my hand at building a PC from scratch. My current comp runs Win 98SE so I was wondering which XP version should I buy for my new rig?Should I install win 98 first then get a copy of XP Home upgrade? Ive been on E-bay to see if I can get a cheap copy, but I can only see full versions(mostly pro).Should I buy full version or stick to XP upgrade?N.B Ive got my original windows CD-ROM. Thanks in advance!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

If you have the original win98 disk........you can buy an winxp upgrade and do a clean install with that......itll just ask you if you have the win98 disk during installation to make sure your <b>upgrading</b>.........<BR><BR>another option is look for an OEM copy of Xp those are pretty cheap but you usually have to buy a peice of hardware(doesnt matter what, as long as its computer hardware) with those since they are only supposed to be bought by system builders.<BR><BR>and out of pro or home i prefer pro....but thats really a matter of personal choice/tastes<BR><BR>

Thanks for the reply Danny! Just one more question,if im upgrading(using my original Win 98 CD) will I still have to call up for my XP activation code?Or will it just want my original Win 98 CD key?

no....winxp upgrades still have their own cd-key(you dont have to call to activate winxp....you do it over the internet.....)............and during setup it asks for the win98 cd itself......just to make sure your are actaully upgradeing

If your in school, many college book stores only off XP Pro but at half price, or less. There are several benefits of Pro but none that will make your rig a better gaming box. As for the harware they mentioned earlier, a mouse counts.

So Win XP upgrade still requires an activation code?Just got it off e-bay(Win XP home upgrade)and the guy states its not on any other computer, didnt mention the fact that it might have been activated in the past..so if it has been activated before,am i up the creek without a paddle so to speak?
