i am an intermidiate user, my question is, how do i remove items that were deleted from my system in the "startup" tab, this is something i find extremely annoying, having this long list of items that are not marked for "startup" but yet remain even tho the software was deleted

You need to go into your Windows Registry using Regedit. The registry entries for your deleted programs will be located in one of the following locations:

1) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun
2) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRun-
3) HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentV ersionRunServices
4) HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun
5) HKEY_CURRENT_USERSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVe rsionRun-

Just delete the right entries. However, be careful to delete only the ones you know about. As a safety measure, it's good to back up your entire registry before messing with it.

i did as u sugjested and lo and behold , nothing was in those locations, i don't want to remove the actual file i want to remove the entries from the startup tab in msconfig, the offending files were already removed long time ago,

and fyi, #2,3,5 are not valid entries in winxp pro registry tree

Sorry, I should have asked what OS you were using. In Win98SE, you find all the entries in the Startup tab in the locations I told you about. Perhaps one of the WinXP gurus can help you. One more thing I can suggest is to do a global search on your Registry for the name of the programs you deleted. That way you may find registry keys associated with your deleted programs and you can then delete those entries.

next to each of the entries is a regedit address (in xp) and usually it is

HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun

you should be able to delete the entries from here...that is how i have done it for ages and it has bever let me down

Ginsu543 with the Regedit again. I'll check that out too, thanks.

Only checked items from the startup tab appear as values in regedit that can be deleted. Check ALL the entries in msconfig/startup, DON'T reboot (close without restart), then run regedit and go to the locations in the registry listed under the "Locations" column opposite the entries in the Startup menu (the majority will be SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run). Then simply delete all the items you don't want listed, (always backup your registry first).

Have you tried downloading Regsupreme and scanning your system? Just go to www.regsupreme.com and download the trial.
