cpu on my lil' sis's comp is running @ 100% all the time. task manager shows svchost.exe running all the time, and when i try to end the process or process tree, the comp counts down to a reboot. i've tried antivirus software, ad aware 6 and spybot S&D, and nothing helps. Her rig is as follows:
win XP pro
P3 500Mhz
intel 440 bx
128 Mb sdram
maxtor 13.6 Gb HD
nvivia geforce 2 mx
any help in fixing this will definitely be appreciated, & may be rewarded with full frontal nudity

Ha Ha, nah, that's ok she won't have to do anything this time. Next time though is a different story!!

Anyways, I'd just go ahead and format the thing. Even if it isn't some Windows problem, formatting will take care of any other problems there may be.

Humm..svchost.exe is a Windows executable I am pretty sure. I think I read somewhere that it is something like a generic name for system processes that don't go under any other name. So, by shutting down the executable, you are shutting down a critical system executable! That is also probably why it is not showing up under adaware and spybot. My only guess is that it is some Windows service that was unknowingly installed on her computer.

One question though...has that system always had problems? WinXP Pro might be too much for it to handle, and might be the reason the cpu is constantly running. The minimum for XP is a 233mhz processor and 64 mb of ram. While Microsoft claims it will run on a system so minimally configured, those specs are laughable. I seriously doubt you could get anything done on a system like that with WinXP. Yes, she is above those specs, but just barely.

So, if her computer has always had problems, either get a new computer (it would probably cost more to upgrade the parts than buy a whole new thing), or format and install something like Win98SE

If it only started recently having problems, then as I said it might be just some Windows service that was accidentally installed. In this case, just format and install WinXP again.

Oh, and about the frontal nudity bit....unless you are a female, keep your clothes on!!

nah, her comp's always run fine that way. cpu is normally way down, even with her older p3 450mhz chip. as for the nudity, that was for any help from any ladies out there. (yes i am a double Y genetically) for my boys out there though, my gf said she might volunteer for it given the right amount of incentive. or alcohol. either way.

Good job! I'm surprised your antivirus didn't detect it. How did you find it if the antivirus didn't detect it?

My friend has the same issue. Proccessor always at 100%, and svhost.exe is what is running. She doesnt have antivirus software, so i ran a scan from the symantec website and svchost was infected with welchia. She also had the blaster worm, and geobot virus. I download the removal tools for all of them and ran it. They all said the virus's were removed, but comp still runs at 100%. The computer is a p4, 1.8ghz, with 512mb ram, running winxp. I got her a copy of norton antivirus and the computer looks clean, no more viruses. How did you fix this issue. Please help.
