View Full Version : Unable to Install Win98
Hey I just recently bought some new parts, to make myself a new pc. Now I have a problem, I have Windows 98 SE, and Windows XP Pro Upgrade. Everything seems to be working ok, until Windows 98 setup restarts for the first time(copying files blah blah blah). It then tries to boot from the CD, or the HDD, instead of resuming setup. If I select Boot from HD, it says there is not enough available memory - CMOS says there is 2GB of available system memory. Im really stuck as to what Im supposed to do. Below is a list of my parts, and configuration.

AMD Athlon 64 FX-51 CPU.
ASUS SK8N Motherboard.
2 GB Corsair Twin-X, Dual Channel, DDR400 = 4 x 512MB Dimms.
2 x Western Digital 10,000 RPM Raptor 36 GB HDs.
ATI 9800 XT 256 MB.
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 - (thats not important tho)
Sony 16x DVD
LiteOn 8x DVR-RW

The two HDs are run in RAID 0, 64k stripe size. The motherboard has the Promise R20378 RAID controller on it.
The HDs are connected to the Mobo using SATA cables. And partitioned in FAT32.

Once i gave up on trying to install Win98 using the RAID setup, I decided to try and install Win98 on just one of the HDs. And again this didn't work.

Anyways I'm out of ideas, and looking for any input.
If you have any questions concerning the setup or whatever, just post away.

Wow. Looks like you have a good system there. Why do you want to install Win98 instead of WinXP Pro. True, Win98 might be a little faster, but WinXP will work much better.

Alright, aside from that humm, it has been a while since I have done an install of Win98, so you will have to refresh my memory. Is this what you are doing?
1. Change BIOS to boot from CD
2. Fdisk
3. Restart
4. Copy files
5. Restart
6. Tries to complete installation

Ok, so if those are the steps it takes, I think if you take out the CD after it copies the files, while it is shutting down, you should be fine. What it may be trying to do is complete the installation by writing to the CD or something...that may be why it says there is not enough memory. I know hard drive space and cd space are not considered "memory" but seeing as how you have 2 gigs of memory, that is the only thing I can think of. Also, try changing the boot order so that it reads off the hard drive after it copies the files.

So I think this should work:
1. Change BIOS to boot from CD
2. Fdisk
3. Restart
4. Copy files
5. Restart
6. During shutdown, take out CD
7. On startup, enter BIOS and change boot order so it reads from Hard Drive
8. Tries to complete installation

If that's what you have already done, I'm out of ideas!! You might want to just do WinXP...as I said it is SO much better. Be sure if you do that though to format to NTFS not FAT32.

You should be able to do the XP install right away from the XP CD. At some point during the installation it should ask you to insert your Win98 CD just to confirm that you are upgrading... that you have an older version of Windows.

Uuugh...I would recommend you not do an upgrade from 98. Your system will run a lot more smoothly if you just do a fresh install of XP (boot from the CD and format with NTFS, etc.).
